in June and entering Harvard this fall.
SYNAGOGUE: Temple Israel.
ORGANIZATIONS: Life Scout, Boy Scouts
of America.
FAVORITE BOOK: "I don't have one
favorite book." Cityboy by Herman
Wouk, Rainmaker by Richard Nash.
Also, Neil Simon is a favorite
playwright.
HOBBIES: Drama, theater, basketball,
piano, clarinet, and reading.
LATEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS: "Getting
into Yale, Harvard and Brown." Also,
winning the Morehead scholarship (a
four-year scholarship to the University
of North Carolina).
PHILOSOPHY: "Whatever you want to do,
try your best. And don't move on until
you feel satisfied that you've given it
your best shot. Try to enjoy yourself as
you are doing it."

BACKGROUND: Glenn Kessler spent his
earliest years in Livonia. When he was
3 years old, his parents moved to West
Bloomfield. He began his elementary
education at Lone Pine School and then
transferred to Brookside, part of the
Cranbrook schools. Although Glenn is
the middle child, he never sensed being
in the middle. "My parents treat us as
individuals," says Glenn. He has always
been a self-motivated student, and he is
not sure exactly why. He doesn't recall
any lectures from his parents, who do
not make many demands of him. "There
was always the desire to be proud of
myself and be happy with what I was
doing." One example of Glenn's self-
motivating force is the Ner Tamid
Religious Award from the Boy Scouts.
Glenn read about the award in the
handbook and decided to study with
Rabbi Syme in order to complete the
requirements. He is involved at Temple
Israel and will graduate from the high
school next week. He has also
participated in many High Holiday
services blowing the shofar. In 1986, he
went to the Maccabiah games in
Toronto as the co-captain of the
basketball team for the Detroit
delegation. Glenn enjoys basketball and
has always played on his school team
until his junior year. In the summer
preceding his junior year, Glenn broke
his toe and could not play basketball in
the fall. He then chose to be involved in
dramatics at Cranbrook. He enjoyed
acting and drama so much that he
attended Tufts University summer
program taking acting classes. In his
senior year, he had to chose between
basketball and drama, because the
school does not allow students to be
involved in both of these time-
consuming activities. "It was a tough
decision. I still love basketball, but I
went with the play." He has directed
three one-act plays at Cranbrook. When
he is not working on plays, he edits the
school newspaper and is busy as senior
class president. Glenn believes he is
able to handle all of these
responsibilities because of his
organizational skills. "I am not
anywhere, what I would consider really,
really smart. My parents told me to be
organized. With school work I figure out
what has to be done and what can wait
for the weekend." Glenn also attributes
his success to wanting to do the best.
He realizes that his best may not be
"the best, but when I have done my
best, I'm satisfied."
