DISCOUNT CARE HOME MEDICAL SUPPLY • • • • six weeks and the Victory Conference celebrating the end of the campaign, was held in Detroit in April of 1922, at which it was an- nounced that over $18 million had already been raised, with more still to come. The only direct reference to Brown's leadership in secur- ing relief for sufferers in the Arab pogroms and about the survivors from the Hebron massacre is in the article written by Morris D. Waldman (Jewish News, Nov. 2, 1945). Waldman was the first executive director of the Jewish Welfare Federation of Detroit at its founding in 1925. In his article, "David A. Brown and Our Times" he wrote: Because Brown has for a number of years been per- sona non grata with some Zionist leaders it was very interesting to read about his work for Palestine. His outstanding service in that area was virtually a one man campaign he launch- ed in the late summer of 1929 netting $2,265,000 for the relief of the surviving victims of the Arab riots in Palestine. He sent 12,000 telegrams throughout the country and the immediate and gratifying response is not only to be attributed to the cause itself but the esteem and confidence American Jewry had for him. That money, used for con- structive relief is still, I am told, in a large measure, in- tact and in action as a revolving loan fund. Brown paid several visits to Palestine. Though not a Zionist he was active for years in promoting sup- port for the Yishuv up to the time when he was at- tacked by some Zionist leaders for promoting the Jewish farm colonies in southern Russia and Biro-Bidjan. David A. Brown was a remarkable man. His life was filled with so many dramatic roles that it is most surpris- ing that no one had under- taken to write a full-length David A. Brown biography. He was one of my closest friends and we often exchang- ed intimacies about Jewish movements and their leaders. My file on David A. Brown is among the few that have been preserved. It is packed with interesting data. You have just read a chapter of Detroit Jewish history. It is, in fact, a chapter i n American history.
