N EWS I Shamir Predicts Mideast Engaged In Arms Race Jerusalem (JTA) — Premier Yitzhak Shamir warned Tuesday that Middle East countries are engaged in a race to acquire sophisticated, advanced weapons systems, including chemical weapons, and he stressed that Israel cannot allow itself to fall behind. "No matter how trying the circumstances, we cannot shut our eyes to the world around us," Shamir said in Jerusalem, at a conference of the Weizmann Institute of Science. "Even countries which are exposed to no real threats to their security are making im- mense investments in arms and military equipment," said Shamir. "With so much violence and totalitarianism around us, we have no alter- native but to maintain the power to deter and, if necessary, to face threats to our security." There was a parallel discus- sion Tuesday at the Hebrew University's Truman In- stitute, where a leading Israeli China-watcher, Prof. Yitzhak Shichor, discussed the implications of Saudi Arabia's recent purchase of intermediate range missiles from China. He said the deal was sur- prising because Saudi Arabia does not recognize the Peo- ple's Republic of China and continues to support Taiwan politically. Nevertheless, there is a steadily developing relationship between the two countries. Chinese exports to Saudi Arabia have averaged a quarter billion dollars an- nually in recent years, Shichor said. Support Letter Sent To Israel Champaign, Ill. (JTA) — Fred Gottheil, a professor of economics at the University of Illionis, Urbana- Champaign, has gotten 136 of his friends, neighbors, facul- ty colleagues and others in the Jewish community here to sign a letter affirming "un- qualified support for the State of Israel in this difficult hour of trial." The letter, dated April 15, was addressed to Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir of Israel, with a covering letter to Shamir's media adviser, Avi Pazner.
