This action resolves a three- year controversy over the ABA's official ties to a Soviet organization, the Association of Soviet Lawyers (ASL), which critics say plays a leading role in Soviet disin- formation and human rights abuses. The ABA is expected to con- tinue its contacts with the Association of Soviet Lawyers as part of a plan to assemble lawyers from many nations at each ABA Annual Meeting. The board of governors ac- tion also ended formal agreements with the national bars of the People's Republic of China, Israel and France.
