There is a need for clarification. Input on religious matters in the Conservative move- ment comes from both the leadership of the Jewish Theological Seminary and the committee on law and standards of the rabbinical assembly, the professional organization of rabbis. Dr. Schorsch, chancellor of the seminary, has decided to grant the diploma of chazzan to women. The committee on law and standards, however, has yet to rule on the halachic validity of women in the can- torate. It is the opinion of the majority of members in the cantors assembly that a rul- ing from this committee is necessary. Our vote was not meant to embarrass the chancellor or create disunity within the movement. Plain and simple it expresses the need for ad- ditional information .. . It should be pointed out that neither the Jewish Theological Seminary nor the rabbinical assembly endorsed the ordination of women as rabbis on the first vote. Within our ranks is a diver- sity of opinion. To criticize us for being unable to settle this issue on the initial ballot is unfair. Chazzan Stephen J. Stein Chairman, Tri-State Region Cantors Assembly Beth El Congregation Akron, Ohio OPINION Priorities Continued from Page 7 among the Jews of Moscow; the matzah and wine and other ceremonial foods led in many cases to long and animated discussions of the meaning of Passover. On our first night in Moscow, some 20,000 people crowded into the synagogue and overflowed into the street. For many among the religiously ignorant who, out of simple curiosity or a deeper need, came to Moscow synagogue that evening, there seemed to be a new sense of awakening, a sense of solidarity with other Soviet Jews never felt before. I believe this experience may turn out to be their first step on a journey toward understanding their Judaic heritage. One leaves with the convic- tion that Soviet Jews must be provided with the opportuni- ty to learn about Judaism and the means, even on a token basis, to quicken their sense of Jewish identity. Some things are already be- ing done. Prayer books and bibles have been sent to the Soviet Union, as have Hebrew language materials. Through negotiations with Soviet of- ficials, the Appeal of Cons- cience Foundation — an ecumenical organization dedicated to advancing freedom of religion around the world — has arranged for the recent opening of a kosher take-out restaurant in Moscow. Other projects aimed at building awareness and understanding of the Jewish cultural and religious heritage are being planned. These are small but remarkable gains. The age of glasnost already has seen ad- vances in the religious sphere that would have been un- thinkable during previous regimes. I returned from Moscow persuaded that op- portnities will soon arise to bring Judaism to a communi- ty that knows little if anything about what it means to be a Jew. By taking advantage of these opportunities, we can help trigger a spiritual awakening. Reform Cite Local Leaders The Fund for Reform Judaism dinner will be held June 2 at Thmple Beth El, the Metropolitan Detroit Federa- tion of Reform Judaism has announced. Leonard Trunsky, past honoree for Temple Israel, will serve as dinner chairman. During the dinner, six new honorees will receive the Lamed Vav Award "for outstanding service" to their temples and the local Reform community. These are Leonard Simons, past president of Temple Beth El; Dr. David Schwartz, past president of Temple Beth Jacob, and his wife, Judy, past president of the Temple Beth Jacob Sisterhood; Allan Tushman, past president of Temple Emanu-El; Helen Gilbert, a long-time Hebrew tutor at Temple Israel; and Gerald Wigod, past president of Temple Kol Ami. The guest speaker at the event will be Rabbi David Hachen, regional rabbi of the Northeast Lakes Region of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations.
