The Luxurious Glatt Kosher
Brilliant's eclecticism and
experience is valued by many.
"Larry knows the Third
World," says Laurence Simon,
president of the American
Jewish World Service, a
3-year-old organization,
whose aim and obligation is
tikkun olam — helping to
mend the world. "He brings
in-depth first-hand ex-
perience in solving the pro-
blems of underdevelopment,"
Simon adds. That's one
reason, Simon explains, that
Brilliant was asked to serve
on the AJWS board of
directors.
Brilliant has a different ex-
planation: "They figured they
needed one lunatic on the
board," he says with a laugh.
Lunatic or not, Brilliant at-
tracts others who believe in
him and the important work
he does with others. Two
months ago, for example, the
Seva Foundation received a
gift from an anonymous
donor: It was an Oregon
ranch worth $950,000. The
ranch will be sold because, as
Brilliant explains, "We don't
want to be in the land
business."
Not all gifts that Brilliant
receives come in material
packages like that, however.
A few weeks ago Brilliant re-
ceived a letter. "It was from
an American Indian woman,"
he recalls. "She had seen a
story about Seva and my
name was mentioned. She
wanted to know if I was the
same Larry Brilliant who de-
livered a baby — her baby —
on Alcatraz Island years ago."
Her letter went on to say
that if Brilliant was the same
person, her son would like to
speak to him. A few days
later, Brilliant called the
young man, who now lives in
New Mexico and will soon be
entering the college.
It's a nice story, a parable of
the thread that holds us all
together, over time and space.
As it is written in the
Mishnah, "Whoever saves a
single life saves a whole
world."

A new computer center will
be dedicated in memory of
Michael David Teitel at the
Sally Allan Alexander Beth
Jacob School for Girls, a divi-
sion of Yeshivath Beth
Yehudah.
The Mickey Teitel Com-
puter Resource Center has
been endowed by Alan Teitel,
who chose to honor the
memory of his son who died
in 1986.
Mickey was a pianist and
composer who died suddenly
at age 30. The center, which
will bear his name, is an ex-
isting computer education
department whose current
curriculum covers first
through 12th grade.
Pupils in the lower grades
work with software packages
that help them build
language arts and math-
ematical skills. Their studies
are generally formatted as
educational games.
Plans are now being made
to replace the older students'
computer systems with more
sophisticated models. They
are currently learning word-
processing as well as com-
puter programming. An an-
nual award will be giver :o
