TV au- diences also saw him in Raid on Entebbe, Enola Gay and Amelia Earhart to name but a few. "Monique James is the one person almost single handed- ly responsible for my career," he says. "And of course, there's Sharon Gless, who has freed me up immensely as an actor." There is a history bet- ween these two, having played husband and wife in The Immigrants in 1978. "We've been the closest of friends for many years, and I owe her a great debt," he says earnestly. Macht also appeared in the short lived TV series, American Dream in 1981, produced by a then unknown Barney Rosenzweig. Actor John Karlen (Harvey Lacey) was also a cast member of the show. When Cagney and Lacey producers decided to find a boyfriend for Cagney, Macht was remembered and called in. Rosenzweig is credited with making the character an ACLU lawyer. "Stephen is everything I wanted David Keeler to be," he beams. "A bleeding heart liberal who would ordinarily have nothing in common with Christine Cagney. I mean," laughs Rosenzweig, "in nor- mal circumstances this cou- ple wouldn't even talk to each other. She hates lawyers!" But the attraction between the two is undeniable and played to the hilt. Although Macht is very busy with his directing, his acting, his teaching and his family, he still finds the time to exercise his social cons- cience. He emcees a program on the Jewish Television Net- work and speaks publicly for the Jewish Federation to raise funds. He's also involv- ed with the Los Angeles Food Bank. His schedule seems quite taxing. "Not at all!" he smiles winsomely, "I enjoy my life, it's full or surprises and great satisfaction." He appeared in two TV movies last year; one opposite Dee Wallace Stone playing the father of an AIDS teenager, and the other limn- ing a parent of a Stephen Macht's first professional role was opposite Dustin Hoffman at the Boston Theater. (Nancy schizophrenic McKeon), with Valerie arper playing his wife. Moviegoers also saw Macht in the short lived Monster Squad, which he says was a well done film and he cannot understand why it didn't have more success. Plans for the Philadelphia- born actor are ambitious, as always. He intends to con- tinue teaching, directing and acting. ❑ 'I GOING PLACES Continued from preceding page The Upstage, 21728 Grand River, Detroit, Norman is That You? today and Saturday, May 13-14, admission. 532-4010.
