League does very well in its
fund-raising efforts, which
complement the parent
group.
lb ensure that its programs
continue in the future, the
Northwest Child Rescue is in-
volved in supporting, through
a fund for the mentally
retarded established about
two years ago, the Jewish
Community Center Social
Program for Teens, Young
Adults and Adults. The
group's fund now exceeds
$70,000.
"Our goal," President Ruth
Hirshfield explained, "is to
make certain that there is at
least $100,000 in the fund so
that the Center can use the
interest income on that sum
to continue its program for
the mentally disabled. That
way, the future will take care
of itself."
The members of Northwest
Child Rescue Women do not
solicit members for funds, but
they do carry on many fund-
raising activities. Among
these are the annual dinner-
dance, a sojurn to solicit funds
in downtown Detroit and a
rummage sale.
For its work, the group has
won several honors, including
the Free Press and Detroit
News cash awards.
But it is not the cash or the
honors which inspire
members of the group to con-
tinue their work.
"It's a mitzvah when you
help others," Ziegler said. "I
like to make one commitment
and work hard on that com-
mitment. Northwest Child
Rescue Women gives me the
opportunity to do that, and
my efforts to help others
make me feel good."
"I'm . very proud of the
members of this group," Hir-
shfield added. "They con-
tribute so much and are so
very resourceful. When you're
working with people like this,
you just don't mind giving of
yourself." ❑
