SPORTS Lathrup Nine Leads League Southfield-Lathrup's varsi- ty baseball team was perfect in Metro Suburban Activities Association play entering this week. The Chargers were 6-0 in the MSAA and 14-1 overall. Among the Lathrup regulars are senior pitcher Jason Markowitz, who is 4-0 after four starts, including two complete games. Markowitz has thrown 22 in- nings, allowed 30 hits, walk- ed just five hitters and struck out 25 while posting a 3.18 ERA. Senior first baseman Steve Memran is among the coun- ty's leading hitters, batting .378. In 37 at-bats he has 14 hits, 10 RBI and eight runs scored. Joel Wax, a senior centerfielder, is 12-for-32, a .375 average with 11 runs scored and six RBI. Starting leftfielder David Katkowsky, also a senior, is 10-for-38 for an average of .263 with 12 RBI and six runs scored. Part- time second baseman Steve Roth is 6-for-20 for a .300 mark. The senior has scored six runs and driven in two. Other Jewish players con- tributing to the Charger's success are juniors Geoff Kaplan and Dan Levinson plus sophomore Scott Lyons. 151 W. Schwartz had driven home 10 runs. Outfielder Jackie Scheurer is 19-for-45 for a .422 mark with a team- leading 13 RBI. Senior cap- tain Rochelle Kaplan, the cat- cher, is 9-for-24, .375, with eight RBI. Sophomore Nikki Kaczander, a back-up pitcher, is 2-0 with a 3.50 ERA. Third baseman Julie Blacher, rightfielder Aliza Grant and second baseman Stefanie Polsky have also helped the Chargers post a 10-3 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the Metro Suburban Activities Association. Baseball Test At Southfield The A.M. Optimist Club of Southfield-Lathrup will hold a tri-star baseball skills con- test at Southfield High School's baseball diamond at 2 p.m. June 5. The contest, designed for youth aged 8-13, is composed of three basic skill tests to evaluate con- testants' skills in hitting, baserunning and throwing. There will be plaques awarded to the first two win- ners in each age group. Every contestant , will receive a memento scorecard. Entry blanks are available at the contest site on the day of competition or through Southfield's Parks and Recreation Department at the Southfield Civic Center. Miller Riding For Health David Miller, 36, a former resident of Huntington Woods, and a 1969 graduate of Royal Oak Dondero High School and Shaarey Zedek High School, now residing in Massachusetts, is par- ticipating in the 1988 Tran- sAmerica Bicycle Trek to benefit the American Lung Association. More than 300 trekkers from across the country will bicycle 3,425 miles from Seat- tle to Atlantic City from June 6 to July 22, and collectively raise over $2,000,000 to benefit the programs and ac- tivities of the Lung Associa- tion. I NEWS I JNF Responds To Campaign Jerusalem (JTA) — The Jewish National Fund, which says it has become the target of a worldwide propaganda "war" against Israel, is rebut- ting false accounts of its land reclamation, acquisiton and development. Moshe Rivlin, JNF chairman, who himself encountered a raucous pro- Palestinian demonstration in Basel, Switzerland, said that Arab propagandists ae por- traying the JNF's long history as anti-Arab activities. Rivlin said last week that JNF has opened its archives to a group of Hebrew Univer- sity academicians who are compiling a rejoinder to a recent, purportedly scholarly, study of JNF by Walter Lehn and Uri Davis. In other actions, JNF has vigorously and successfully shown: That the Switzerland
