NBC Ignored
Fletcher's Advice

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Martin
Fletcher, the NBC News
correspondent in Israel who
was penalized for violating
censorship rules, tried in
vain to prevent another possi-
ble violation by the network,
the newspaper Hadashot
reported.
NBC ignored Fletcher's ad-
vice when it interrupted
regular programming last
week with a bulletin repor-
ting the Israel Defense Force
incursion into southern
Lebanon. The bulletin was
broadcast hours before the of-
ficial announcement and
possibly even before Israeli
troops crossed over the border
into Lebanon.
The NBC report is being in-
vestigated by government of-
ficials for possible breach of
censorship. Fletcher recom-
mended that the report, based
on American sources, not be
broadcast and refused to
broadcast it from Israel.
Fletcher was quoted as say-
ing that the impending IDF
action in Lebanon was prob-
ably leaked by an Israeli of-
ficial to the Pentagon, which
passed on the tip to NBC
News in New York.
Fletcher's press credentials
were suspended by the Israel
Government Press Office
because he bypassed the cen-
sor with a report about the
assassination of Khalil al-
Wazir, second in command of
the Palestine Liberation
Organization. The press
credentials of Glen Frankel,
Israel correspondent of The
Washington Post, were
suspended for a similar
breach of the censorship
rules.

Orthodox
Archives Ruined

New York (JTA) — The
Agudath Israel of America
hopes to reconstruct at least
part of the National Orthodox
Jewish Archives which were
destroyed by a fire that last
week swept one floor of the
organization's national head-
quarters here.
The organization's presi-
dent, Rabbi Moshe Sherer,
said no one was hurt in the
blaze, which orginated with a
faulty electrical fixture.
The archives contained
thousands of documents and
photographs relating to the
Holocaust, Orthodox Jewish
life in pre-Holocaust Europe
and the activities of Orthodox
Jews in the United States,
before and during the
Holocaust, to rescue Jews in
Europe.

Your fat, fatigue & frustrations
will vanish permanently.
