The bombing of the Le Pen
clubs coincided with a huge
pro-Le Pen demonstration
during which tens of
thousands of his supporters
marched down the boulevards
with flying flags and booming
brass bands to the cry of
"France for Frenchmen only."
Le Pen took the salute from
a podium set up in front of a
statue of the patron saint of
France, Joan of Arc. The
thousands of marchers who
saluted him with raised arms
could have been mistaken for
Hitler's storm troopers, ex-
cept for their "V' for victory
sign.
Le Pen was eliminated from
the presidential race in the
first round of balloting on
April 24. But his National
Front polled an unexpected
14.4 percent of the vote. More
recent polls showed that 28
percent of the respondents
were pleased by his showing.
It alarmed Jews, who
regard Le Pen as anti-Semitic
even though his xenophobic
campaign was aimed against
resident aliens, notably
North African Arabs.

Chicago Mayor's
Aide Fired
Chicago (JTA) — Acting
Mayor of Chicago Eugene
Sawyer discharged one of his
aides, Steve Cokely, for
delivering a series of speeches
attacking whites, primarily
Jews. One of the lectures,
called "Compulsory Educa-
tion is Mandatory Strangula-
tion," was delivered at the
Nation of Islam's building
last November, and recently
replayed for the news media
at the offices of the Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith here.
Local newspapers also
published parts of the 37-
year-old aide's speeches to Na-
tion of Islam followers of
Louis Farrakhan, causing a
furor, especially among
religious leaders who were
outraged that Sawyer delayed
a week before firing Cokely.
Comments in the lectures in-
cluded a warning that Jews
were conspiring to rule the
world.
Cokely had earned $35,000
per year as special projects
coordinator for the acting
mayor.
