Women Count
In Minyans

New York (JTA) — A survey
conducted by the Women's
League for Conservative
Judaism found that about
two-thirds of Conservative
synagogues in the United
States and Canada now count
women as part of the minyan
(10-member prayer quorum)
and grant them honors such
as aliyot (being called to the
Torah) during worship ser-
vices.
The Women's League,
which relased survey results
last week, polled 693 of its of
in the United States,
Canada, Mexico and Puerto
Rico.
The responses showed that
65 percent of the congrega-
tions count women as part of
the prayer quorum and 66.5
percent give them aliyot on
either all or special occasions.
A ruling by the Law Com-
mittee of the Rabbinical
Assembly, the rabbinic
organization of the Conser-
vative movement, that
women may be counted as
equals to men in the minyan
was adopted on October 5
1973. But it has not become
universal. The Women's
League survey showed that
7.5 percent of the congrega-
tions give aliyot but do not
count women as part of the
minyan, and 14 percent are
currently studying or plan to
study the question.

Reward Offered
In Defacing

Washington (JTA) — The
Jewish War Veterans offered
a $1,000 reward for informa-
tion leading to the arrest and
conviction of the vandals who
defaced the Vietnam War
Memorial with scratches, in-
cluding a swastika. The
493-foot granite wall contains
the names of American ser-
vicemen who died in Viet-
nam.
The wall, the most visited
site in Washington since it
opened in 1982, was erected
through the efforts of the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Fund, which also has offered
a $1,000 reward.
Jack Litz, the JWV's na-
tional commander, said he
was particularly concerned
that a swastika was dis-
covered among the deep scrat-
ches. "This symbol of the evil
Nazi regime, which so many
Jewish war veterans fought
against, has been reappear-
ing in recent months on
synagogues, on Jewish
monuments and cemeteries,"
he said.
