ubarak Awad, the
Palestinian Ameri-
can ordered expelled
from Israel last week for his
alleged role as a leader of the
Palestinian uprising, has
been portrayed as an advocate
of non-violence and a follower
of Ghandi.
But in an interview with
Israeli journalist David
Bedein in Jerusalem earlier
this year, Awad characterized
both violence and non-vio-
lence as means to an end, said
he was more pragmatic than
either Ghandi or Dr. Martin
Luther King, and referred to
the West Bank and Gaza as
the first step to gaining all of
Palestine.
Palestinians "have the
right" to choose violence,
Awad said in the unpublished
interview. "If they think they
can achieve things in guns,
that is up to them. I can not
achieve things in guns, I don't
believe that it achieves
anything. I'm trying to show
them an alternative to a gun.
If we become successful in
those alternatives, hopefully
people will drop their guns
and use our methods."
Awad suggested that one
cannot turn people away from
violence overnight. "I am
more pragmatic than either
Gandhi or Martin Luther
King was," he said. "I don't
tell people how they have to
be morally, and accept non-
violence . . . I am taking a
stand that we have been suf-
fering from so much violence
here . . . there is no way that
you can change people over-
night. 'Ib them violence is a
way of life.
"To me a Palestinian who
carries a gun and a Palesti-
nian who believes in non-
violence are both reaching to
one aim. That aim is libera-
tion. First the liberation of oc-
cupation, we want to get rid
of Israeli occupation . . . then
the objective that we want to
achieve, that people have to
live in peace. The Palesti-
nians are tired of being
refugees, of being a different
class, of being subjected to tor-
ture . . . from Israel and Arab
countries. We have to have
our own state . . . and from
then we might choose, if you
want to have peace with
Israel, or Jordan . . . we must
make this decision . . . we
must be liberated, not only
politically, but personally,
and get out of the idea of fear.
We are not afraid, this we
have been proving now, we
are not afraid."
Awad declared that "there
would be no peace without us
having a Palestinian state,"
which could begin on the
West Bank and Gaza but that
would be "the first step to all
of Palestine. If you want to
have a confederation, West
Bank and Gaza are very
small areas. They couldn't be
together and serve the
political and economic pur-
pose of a state. After that
there has to be a confedera-
tion with Israel, or a con-
federation with Jordan .. .
depending on what the people
want. But this has to happen,
not by force, but by agreement
or by peaceful resolution. But
"I would not dare
to say that I didn't
want my land in
Jaffa or in Haifa."
I, as a Palestinian, would not
dare to say that I didn't want
my land in Jaffa, or in Haifa."
He did suggest that he
would be willing to be com-
pensated through money for
the land and by bringing peo-
ple like Ariel Sharon to trial
for "crimes against humanity.
"We have 40 years of
refugees; someone has to com-
pensate for their suffering."
The U.S. has vigorously pro-
tested the expulsion order,
which was delayed pending a
May 23 hearing by the Israeli
Supreme Court. Awad is be-
ing held in jail until then, and
has been on a hunger strike
since his arrest last week.

Greeks Release

Athens (JTA) — Israeli
