What has happened in
Jerusalem is a tribute to the
success of the integration that
was achieved there — a
perverse tribute, perhaps, ex-
cept that it has followed all
the laws of modern na-
tionalist politics.
Meanwhile, tourism is down
in Jerusalem. It appears that
American Jews who demand
that Israelis be tough are
themselves too tender to visit
Jerusalem when it may be
dangerous.
For 20 years, American
Jews have been visiting Jeru-
salem for a high. I suggest
that they visit Jerusalem,
this time for a low. It is a low
in which their brethren live
daily, hourly. "And in its
heart, a wall," was how
"Jerusalem Of Gold," the an-
them of the victory in 1967,
described the holy city.
American Jews are always
moistened by that song. They
should heed all its words. ❑

Kitty Dukakis Is Called
A Bad Role Model
New York (JTA) — Will the
glamour of the White House
accelerate intermarriage
among American Jews?
The Intermountain Jewish
News thinks so, and explains
why in an editorial appearing
in its May 6 edition entitled
"The Hushed-Up Quandary
which Kitty Dukakis Could
Create for the American
Jewish Community?'
Kitty Dukakis is the wife of
Massachusetts Gov. Michael
Dukakis, who is expected to
become the 1988 Democratic
presidential nominee. She is
Jewish, and if her husband is
elected, would be the first
Jewish first lady.
"What kind of role model
would Kitty Dukakis be for
our Jewish children?" asks
the weekly published in
Denver.
The editorial makes clear it
is not questioning anyOne's
right to marry whomever
they chose or to run for any
political office.
"We're talking about a
woman who married out, who
reportedly does not even raise
her children exclusively in
the Jewish tradition, and who
might well be projecting all
this from the most visible
arena in the world," the
editorial explains.
"What kind of role model is
this for Jewish children? Only
the naive can believe that
Kitty Dukakis will not be an
object of attention and ad-
miration by Jewish children,
especially if seders and the
like become visible in the
White House," the editorial
suggests.
It concludes, "As if all this
were not worrisome enough,
we forsee a possibility of
demagoguery over this — a
Jewish organizational corn-
petition to extend to Mrs.
Dukakis every Jewish
courtesy without any accom-
panying, firm statement on
the unsuitability of intermar-
riage as a Jewish ideal:'

Compromise
On Taba Unlikely
Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel is
ready and eager to settle its
dispute with Egypt over Taba
by compromise, before a five-
member international ar-
bitration panel issues its bin-
ding ruling, expected some
time this month.
That was stated officially
May 4 following consultations
between Premier Yitzhak
Shamir, Foreign Minister
Shimon Peres and Defense
Minister Yitzhak Rabin. .
But the three covernment
leaders have failed to agree
on the nature of the com-
promise, and it is in fact
doubtful that Egypt is in-
terested in one at this late
stage.
'PLO Ready
For Peace'
Athens (JTA) — A ranking
Palestine Liberation
Organization official claims
that the PLO no longer calls
for Israel's destruction, and in
fact dropped that demand
from its Covenant 14 years
ago.
Shalah Kallar, also known
as Abu Iyad, said the PLO is
prepared to hasie a common
border with Israel in a
Palestinian state, according to
an interview in Baghdad,
published in the Greek daily
Eleftherotypia.
