BERG AND URBACH STAFF REPORT W herever he went, Frank Simons had a smile on his face and a good word for everyone. Like a politician, he shook hands and exchanged pleasantries. He formed ins- tant friendships with everyone he met. When Mr. Simons died on May 4 at age 59, it was a loss felt not only by the Temple Israel membership, where he was the administrator for 27 years, but by the rest of the Jewish community as well. A native Detroiter, Mr. Simons was graduated from Central High School and Wayne State University, where he majored in jour- Frank Simons realism. He served as a copy boy at the Detroit News and as city editor for The Jewish News for 10 years. He joined the staff of the temple in 1960. Mr. Simons served as an of- ficer of the National Associa- tion of Temple Administrators from 1967 to 1975, was presi- dent from 1973 to 1975 and was an honorary board member for life. He was presi- dent of the Council of Synagogue Executive Direc- tors of Metropolitan Detroit, a board member of the Metropolitan Detroit Federa- tion of Reform Synagogues, a board member of the Synagogue Council Greater Detroit and a board member of the regional board of he Union of American Hebrew Congregations. He was a past member of the UAHC executive commit- tee, UAHC board, UAHC Commission on Synagogue Administration, UAHC- NATA Board of Certification, UAHC Commission on Gerontology and a member of the Committee to Restructure the UAHC. Mr. Simons was co-chair- man of the Synagogues and Schools Section of the Allied Jewish Campaign and was an active supporter of State of Israel Bonds and the Jewish National Fund. He also was the past president of the Tem- ple Israel Brotherhood and former vice president of the Young Married Group at the temple. Mr. Simons leaves his wife, Lucy; a son, Eric of Boulder, Colo.; two daughters, Cantor Alane Katzew of New York and Mrs. Oded (Yonina) Barnea of Israel; a brother, Robert of Boynton Beach, F 1 a . ; and three grandchildren. Friday 9 A.M. to 2 hrs. before Sabbath Aron Alperin New York (JTA) — Aron Alperin, an author and jour- nalist who edited Yiddish newspapers in Poland, Paris and New York, died May 4 at age 87. For the past 25 years, he was an editor of two of the last Yiddish newspapers in the U.S., the Jewish Morning Journal and The Day. Born in Lodz, Poland, Mr. Alperin was city editor and editorial writer of the Lodzer Tagerblatt from 1920 to 1926, and until 1928 the Lodz cor- respondent of the Warsaw Yiddish daily, Hajnt. He moved to Paris and was editor-in-chief of the Pariser Hajnt from 1928 to 1939. From 1930 to 1940 he was staff correspondent for the Hebrew daily Haaretz, published in Tel Aviv. Mr. Alperin came to New York in 1941, escaping with his family when France was occupied by the Germans. He joined the staff of The Day, becoming associate editor in 1946, and stayed on in that capacity when it merged with the Morning Journal in 1951, until it discontinued publica- tion in 1970. Mr. Alperin was chairman of the executive council of the Zionist Organization of France from 1936 to 1940, and a member of the ad- ministrative council of the Zionist Organization of America from 1947 to 1952.
