Israel will come though pro-
phets, not through
diplomats."
Although he described
himself as a "free thinker,"
Ahad Ha'am believed that
Jewish nationalists should
keep traditional observances
for their survival value and
should look upon the "sacred
things of the people" with
love and respect.
In the autumn of 1907, the
Wissotsky tea firm asked him
to take charge of its recently
established London office; he
moved there with his family.
From the outset, Ahad Ha'am
was unhappy with the big
city. He felt a sense of aliena-
tion from Jewish life.
The final blow occurred in
1912, when his daughter,
Rachel, married a non-Jewish
Russian student in
Switzerland. The proud Jew
who had written so strongly
against intermarriage as a
threat to Jewish existence
was unable to reconcile
himself to this event.
At the end of 1921 Ahad
Ha'am, his wife and son settl-
ed in the new town of Tel Aviv.
Here he was treated with
great respect. Every after-
noon, his street was roped off
so traffic would not disturb
the old philosopher.
In 1926, the entire Jewish
world celebrated his 70th bir-
thday. He died in 1927 and
was buried in the old
cemetery of Tel Aviv.
The work of Ahad Ha'am
was important because it pro-
vided a rationale for Jews
who were not traditionaly
religious to remain in the
Jewish fold. His emphasis on
the new land becoming a
spiritual center was profound.
His insistence on the use of
the Hebrew language was a
strong part of its revival. He
was the author of the idea
that led to the creation of the
Encyclopedia Judaica.
But, above all, his concern
that Judaism continue to be
a vital, creative force
everywhere Jews lived in-
spired generations to come,
and its effect is still felt today.
