Or the offices of Americans for Progressive Israel or the Kibbutz Aliyah Desk? One last note. There is a certain feeling of powerlessness that American Jews feel regarding events in the Middle East, and the con- flict between the State of Israel and the PLO. This feel- ing extends to Jewish organizations as well as in- dividuals. In a certain sense, the campaign to close down the PIO offices was an at- tempt, perhaps a cathartic act, a symbolic gesture that "we" did something to help Israel in its battle against "them." If we can learn anything from recent history, we can see that this symbolic act is also a futile one. One can move toward peace and rap- prochement only when the fighting stops and negotia- tions between enemies begin. LETTERS Continued from Page 6 guidance in both religious and secular matters. In our age of drugs, crime, assimila- tion, divorce and corruption within all levels of society, is it not time for us to return to the paths of our forefathers? Should not an occasion such as a bar mitzvah be celebrated in a proper and respectful manner. The rabbis of all three bran- ches of Judaism, although they may be pressured by their individual congrega- tions, should muster support through their various rab- binic organizations to educate our people in the proper and dignified manner to celebrate important milestones, even if they are taking place outside of the synagogue facility. Then, we will all benefit from a change in attitude and prac- tice . . . Perhaps your newspaper could acknowledge the families who are desparately trying to maintain these values instead of reporting the incidences of those who want to deny them. Rabbi Edward S. We are convinced that this campaign should not have been waged, and that it was wrong to shut down the PIO office in Washington, D.C. As some commentators already have pointed out, there is nothing in the special legisla- tion to prevent American citizens from establishing a new office, perhaps called American Friends of the Palestine Liberation Organization, which would perform essentially the same function as the PIO did. Similarly, it is hard to calculate the value to the sponsors of the PIO that the publicity surrounding this case generated. Finally, the precedent of closing down offices of organizations that have views far from the politically- acceptable "center" disturbs us greatly. Once they close down the PIO office, and once they close down the PLO Mis- sion to the United Nations (this campaign is now under way as well), what will pre- East Germany Cracks Down On Neo-Nazis Bonn (JTA) — The East Ger- man official news agency, ADN, indicated that authori- ties are cracking down on neo- Nazi activities, which they once claimed did not exist in the Democratic Republic. Ac- cording to ADN, nine neo- Nazis went on trial in the Oranienburg district court last week, charged with spreading anti-Semitic pro- paganda and displaying Nazi symbols. East German officials also confirmed Western reports that seven neo-Nazis received prison sentences in Dresden at the end of March for circu- lating anti-Semitic propagan- da, assaults on individuals and destruction of property. The sentences ranged from 8 months to 4 years. The neo-Nazi problem was acknowledged for the first time in December 1987, when the authorities announced the trial of several neo-Nazi groups, including some ex- treme right-wing organizations.
