ter and professor at the University
of Wisconsin, demonstrated the
use of hot glass. With technical
assistance, artists learned about
glass furnaces and began blowing
glass in their own studios.
At first the movement was in-
fluenced by Tiffany and great ar-
tists from the Art Nouveau period.
Over the years artists began ex-
perimenting with sculptural styles.
When Corning Museum of Glass
sponsored a worldwide glass
competition in 1979, the movement
gained momentum.
The Sosins home reflects their
involvement and dedication to this
movement. Every room is filled
with glass displays. Upon entering
the foyer, there are several pieces
displayed on black and white
cylinders at four different levels.
The living and dining room areas
are filled with lighted etageres of
glass. The collection extends to
the bedroom and accents the
furniture.
Some of the memorable pieces
include: baskets and clusters by
Dale Cihihuly, geometric construc-
tions by Steven Weinberg, multi-
faceted vases by Joel Philip
Myers, twelve works by Richard
Ritter, and unusual configurations
by Marvin Lipofsky.
The Sosin collection continues
to grow and become more
aesthetic. "I want interesting,
creative and innovative work. I
want art," says Jean.
Jean and Hilbert Sosin sum-
marize their feelings in the catalog
from the University of Michigan-
Dearborn on their collection.
"Developing a contemporary
glass collection has been a rewar-
ding experience through which
our lives have been enriched. We
have made many fine friends
among the artists, museum
curators, gallery owners and col-
lectors. We owe much to this new
art form. Hopefully, over the years,
we have been able to reciprocate
by providing encouragement and
support to others who are also in-
volved in the studio glass move-
ment ."
