"most people who are building
new homes are putting work out
rooms in."
Franklin Racquet Club, the
Jewish Community Center's
Health Club and Fitnesse don't
have to worry about boarding up
their windows yet. Lots of people
prefer the social aspects health
clubs offer, as well as the competi-
tion of working out with other peo-
ple. But, for more and more peo-
ple, the convenience of working
out when they want, at their own
pace, in the privacy of their own
home, is becoming an attractive
alternative.
Work out rooms vary in size,
scope and decor, and can be an
option or addition to health clubs
for lots of us. For some, an exer-
cise bike in the master bedroom
successfully augments outside
work out regimes. For others, a
sizeable room designed and
devoted to working out, with
several machines and a personal
trainer, is the way to go. For fitness-
oriented Detroiters, everything
goes.
Philip and Amy Fisher of
Franklin set aside a section of their
lower level and put in a treadmill,
a Marcy weight station, free
weights and bar bells with weights,
and began working out with per-
sonal trainer Keith Lewis of Fitness
Elite in Birmingham three times a
week about a year ago. "I knew
conditioning was really important
and would help my business life
and my life in general," says Fisher.
Both he and Amy prefer the
privacy of working out at home to
the social stimuli of local clubs, as
well as the convenience of work-
ing out at home.
"You know when you wake up
at home and go downstairs to ex-
ercise, you're going to use the
equipment," he says. "It's conve-
nient. I find I exercise more effi-
ciently, and then I head upstairs to
shower." Fisher figures his work
outs save him approximately thir-
ty to forty-five minutes per session
versus going out of the house to
a club.
