found that garden centers and
nurseries now carry what are refer-
red to as "pre-emergent" herbi-
cides.

been planted and mulched, can-

shakers are used to sprinkle the
chemicals around in the beds.
What happens? As new weed
seeds fly in, seedlings are nipped
in the bud as they attempt to come
up.
When using any chemicals in

tions and warnings and follow to
the letter. Make sure that the herbi-
cide you're using has been de-
clared okay for use around the
particular plants in your land-
scape.
If you must have grass (and one
must admit that although it re-
quires constant mowing, it really
does set flower borders off
beautifully) consult your local
nurseryman for low maintenance
types. These will not have to be
fertilized or watered as often as the
high-powered beauties. So maybe
your lawn isn't as lush as your
neighbors, do you really care that
much?
As to watering, everyone knows
the answer to that. It's now possi-
ble to put in sprinkler systems. All
the homeowner has to do is turn
on the switch. Some systems are
so sophisticated, they are run by
computers which can be pro-
grammed to operate without
human help.
Many do-it-yourselfers are smart
enough to install their own. Others
will have to hire experts to do it for
them.
