The parlor meeting is being held as a prelude to the Detroit Area city-wide dinner on June 9 at Adat Shalom Synagogue. Honored at the dinner will be Dr. Jerome and Sharon Horwitz, Cong. B'nai Moshe; Daniel Knopper, Adat Shalom Synagogue; Jean- nette Tilchin, Cong. Beth Shalom; and Saul Waldman, Cong. Shaarey Zedek. At Tuesday's parlor meeting, Rabbi Marshall T. Meyer, special counsel to the seminary's Chancellor Ismar Schorsch, will be the guest speaker. Rabbi Meyer is the spiritual leader of Cong. B'nai Jeshurun in New York. He holds honorary doctorates from Dartmouth College, The Jewish Theological Seminary and Kalamazoo College. In 1984, he received Argen- tina's "Order of the Liberator San Martin" for efforts in human rights. That same year, he received the Interna- tional B'nai B'rith Dor L'dor Award "for outstanding achievements in the service of humanity." In 1985, Rabbi Meyer received the New Jewish Agenda's People of the Book Human Rights Award. Rabbi Meyer's professional activities include: member of the National Commission for Disappeared Persons ap- pointed by President Raul Alfonsin, Buenos Aires, Argentina; consultant for Secretariat of Human Development and the Family; Department of Health under President Alfonsin; founding co-president, Jewish Move- ment for Human Rights, Buenos Aires, Argentina; member, board of directors, Joint Distribution Commit- tee; presidential commission, Argentine Permanent Assem- bly for Human Rights; foun- ding member, Higher In- stitute of Religious Studies in Ecumenical Affairs, Buenos Aires General Chairman for the seminary's Detroit campaign is Harold Berry. The guest speaker at the June 9 Dinner will be Rabbi Leonid Feldman, First Soviet refusenik to be ordained a Conservative rabbi. SZ Hospital Friends Have Scholarship Lunch The seventh annual schol- arship luncheon of the American Committee for the Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem will take place on June 15 at noon in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Stollman, 2688 Indian Mound S. Birmingham. The guest speaker will be Dr. Jonathan Balkin, director of the intensive coronary unit at Shaare Zedek Medical Center. Dr. Balkin was born in South Africa and received his medical training at the Wit- watersrand Medical School in Johannesburg. In 1977, he made aliyah and continued his studies as an intern and resident at Shaare Zedek.
