If you thought that the Michigan State Cooperative Extension Ser-
vice is only for farmers, then your in for a big surprise.This service.
which is supported by county, state. and Federal monies, encom-
passes a range of practical, educational and helpful workshops,
seminars. and demonstrations. dealing with a range of subject
matter that almost never ends. In addition, a multitude of "how-
to and what-to-do" pamphlets and booklets are available, as well
as, in some cases. hot lines where you can get answers to most
questions dealing with food, food preservation, and gardening.
Young people also benefit through the 4-H program which offers
a multitude of varied activities ranging from Career Exploration
to Mountaineering to Foreign Exchange Programs to Horseback
Riding for Handicappers.
Each County, in conjunction with Michigan State University and
the U.S. Department of Agriculture. operates a cooperative exten-
sion service. and the programs in each county are geared to the
needs of the population. Macomb County's Office is located on
the Ilth floor of the Macomb County Building in Mt. Clemens. For
information call; 469-5180. This office also maintains a Food and
Nutrition Hot Line. calls are accepted between 9 and 3 Monday
through Friday. The number is 469-5060.
Oakland County's Offices ore located at 1200 N. Telegraph Rd.
in Pontiac. call 858-0880 for information.
Washtenaw County's office is located at 4133 Washtenaw Ave.,
Ann Arbor, and their telephone number is 971-0079.
Wayne County's Cooperative Extension Service is located at
5454 Venoy Rd. in Wayne. Call 721-6550 for information.
Anyone interested in getting a catalog of all the pamphlets and
booklets available born the Cooperative Extension Service can call
their county office or write to: MSU Bulletin Office. P.O. Box 6640,
East Lansing, MI 48826-6640. If you visit your local county exten-
sion office you will find most of the literature available, and the
first 10 different booklets that are priced at 25 cents or less are free
for the asking. Much of the literature available deals with food and
nutrition. Information is also available on gardening, home ap-
pliances. and many other topics.
