So it's exciting to hear that Birmingham Theatre's five- week engagement May 17-June 19 is the late, great Gershwin's jazz age classic "Girl Crazy." The syncopated jazz sounds of George and the witty, catchy lyrics of brother Ira re- mains one of the American theater's finest scores . . . "Embraceable You," "I Got Rhythm," "But Not For Me" and "Biding My Time" have become music world standards. In 1930, "Girl Crazy" in- troduced a notable female performer who achieved long- running popularity and suc- cess . . . The late Ethel Mer- man made her first Broadway stage appearance as Kate singing "Sam and Deliah," "Boy, What Love Has Done lb Me" and the show-stopping "I Got Rhythm" . . .
