Assad's ejection of Arafat resulted in a split within the PLO between Arafat and a more extreme pro-Syrian seg- ment which included such terrorist groups as Abu Nidal and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, led by George Habash. Arafat's return to Damas- cus was facilitated by the assassination of his second-in command, Abu Jihad, in Tunis, an attack believed to have been carried out by the Israelis. Although Abu Jihad's family had wanted him to be buried in Jordan, the PLO leadership decided on Syria, at Assad's invita- tion, in what was considered a slap a King Hussein of Jordan. presents the 35th Annual Hebrew Music Festival FRIDAY, MAY 13, 1988 8:00 P.M. Several people who had con- sumed the blue-stained fruit suffered no ill effects, though the substance did kill labor- atory mice. Israel Adato, an Israeli Agriculture Ministry expert, flew to Rome to help local health authorities trace the tainted fruit. Before the an- nouncement about the dye, the Italian Health Ministry ordered grapefruit removed from shops, markets and warehouses all over Italy after blue grapefruit were discovered in Rome super- markets and anonymous warnings that the fruit had been sabotaged.
