Sister/State Agreement

ava Raeside flew into
Detroit from New
York on Sunday to do
a little business and pay
homage to her native country,
Israel.
The manager for OR-LEE-
OR, a New York-based Israeli
clothing company, brought
with her a collection of
leathers for a fashion show to
kick off Israel Trade Week in
Michigan.
"I couldn't refuse Israel,"
she said. "It's my home."
Raeside was just one of an
estimated 400 people who
packed into the center of the
Tel-12 Mall to celebrate trade
week, part of Israel's 40th an-
niversary celebration.
Sponsored by the
American/Israel Chamber of
Commerce of Michigan with
assistance from the Michigan
Department of Commerce
and the Jewish Welfare
Federation, the event
spotlighted a couture of
women's fashions, surrounded
by such delicacies as wine
and caviar, Israeli foods and
displays by more than 25

Levy signed a long-awaited
sister/state agreement.
"We decided we would wait
to sign something significant
when we had somewhere to
go;' Ross told the crowd. "It is
in our mutual interest to
build economic bridges
because we have a great deal
of interest in the com-
munities."

Levy, who with Ross, met
with several business ex-
ecutives to discuss possible
joint venture arrangements
during his week-long visit,
called the signing a "step in.
the process."
"The rest is up to you. We
created the frame," he
said. At the ceremony, Levy
gave Ross a medal inscribed
with a picture of Jerusalem.
"This symbolizes the new
gates being opened between
Michigan and Jerusalem;'
Levy said.
Ross and Israel Trade Com-
missioner David Litvak sign-
ed a pact in January 1987,
establishing ongoing com-
mercial relations between the
two states. The sister/state
agreement solidifies that
pact.
Ross started lobbying for
Michigan/Israel relations in
1985, after Israel became the
only country to enjoy free
trade status with the United
States and the European com-
mon market.

State Rep. Burton Leland,
D-Detroit, said he also plans
to introduce legislation
establishing the
Michigan/Israeli Commercial
Horizon. If created, MICH
would join similar trade com-
missions in Texas,
Massachusetts and Virginia.
Levy said trade agreements
have been signed in
Maryland and Florida. Soon,
he said, sister/state ar-
rangements are expected bet-
ween Israel and New Jersey,
Connecticut, Wisconsin, Il-
linois and Minnesota.
"The agreement is just a
peak along the way to imple-
ment what we have been do-
ing for a long time. We are
really progressing from a
practical point of view in
