Shabbat Ruling
Overturned

New York (JTA) — A federal
appeals court in New York
has overturned a lower court's
ruling that would have allow-
ed an Orthodox Jewish high
school senior to attend his
graduation ceremony.
The decision earlier this
month of the United States
Court of Appeals for the Se-
cond Circuit reverses a
district court's decision direc-
ting the board of education in
North Babylon, L.I. to accom-
modate the religious beliefs of
David Smith, by refraining
from holding its 1988 high
school graduation exercises
on a Saturday.
Smith, 18, the only obser-
vant Jew in the Babylon High
School class of '88, had advis-
ed the school since his
freshman year that his strict
observance of the Sabbath
would prevent him from at-
tending the Saturday, June 4,
graduation.

COMPULSIONS AND OBSESSIONS

A compulsion can be defined as
an unreasonable need to behave in
a certain way. An obsession is an
idea or thought that sticks in your
mind and can't be brushed away.
Most of us have minor obses-
sions or compulsions but they
don't get in the way of our work-
ing or personal lives. For example,
sometimes there may be a song
that you can't seem to get out of
your head. Or you may feel a com-
pulsion to walk to work everyday
on the same side of the street.
Under normal conditions the song
will drift out of your head, and
there will be days when you take
another route to work. These
things do not really bother you.
When an obsession or compul-
sion so dominates your behavior
that it restricts your ability to act

freely, and you find it difficult to
think about other things, then
something needs to be done. At
times, simply focusing your
thoughts in other areas, and keep-
ing busy may help push away the
obsessive thoughts. If this doesn't
help, then you should see profes-
sional counseling to help you find
out what is causing the problem
and how you can overcome it.

Peres Plan
Is Criticized

Jerusalem (JTA) — Foreign
Minister Shimon Peres's
blueprint for peace through
territorial compromise came
under attack from both left-
and right-wing elements of
the Labor Party, at a meeting
of its political committee in
Tel Aviv April 28.
Knesset Speaker Shlomo
Hillel, a leader of the party's
hawks, thought the plan was
too vague with respect to the
future of Jewish settlements
in the territories. Leftists
found it lacking in detail and
too "amorphous."
The criticism was voiced
amid reports that a signifi-
cant majority of Israelis sup-
port territorial compromise in
principle and thought Peres,
chairman of the Labor Party,
could handle the peace pro-
cess better than Premier Yit-
zhak Shamir, leader of Likud.

Justice Nixes
Waldheim Aid

Washington (JTA) — The
Justice Department is refus-
ing to help Austrian Presi-
dent Kurt Waldheim prepare
a libel suit against World
Jewish Congress President
Edgar Bronfman.
John Russell, a Justice
Department spokesman,
acknowledged that Waldheim
had asked for assistance in
preparing a slander case
against Bronfman, but said
the department declined
because it would constitute a
"conflict of interest:'
