It means diversity in what we
do and the ways we do it.
Jewish organizations and
agencies must be willing to
change and experiment.
Jews' lack of involvement is
partly due to the competition
of a secular society and the
weakening bonds of religious
Judaism. But the problem
also rests partly with Jewish
organizations and institu-
tions themselves. How

the Vaad is working closely
with the Fresh Air Society in
maintaining the highest
standards of kashruth at the
Tamarack Camps, thus enabl-
ing the evergrowing kosher
public to send their children
to their camps.
We therefore find it vexing
and in terribly poor taste that
an event of this nature held at
a place which has become one
of the important addresses for
Detroit Jewry, took place
under the aforementioned
conditions.
We call upon community
leaders to insist that all
public functions be kosher in
order to accommodate all
members of the Jewish
community.

creative, energetic, and open
have they been to new ideas,
new programs, and new faces?
Federations, temples,
synagogues, and all other
organizations must stop ask-
ing "How do we bring more
people within our walls?" and
seriously consider "How can
we expand our walls to the
places where people live and
think and believe?" Hundreds
of thousands of Jews with
nameless faces are walking
through our institutional and
organizational doors. It is our
communal task to ensure
that they do not walk right
back out again.

As the Jewish Festival '88,
sponsored by the American
Jewish Committee and
hosted at the Jewish Com-
munity Center as part of the
40th anniversary of the state
of Israel, a mistake occured.
It was the intent of the
American Jewish Committee,
as well as the 40th anniver-
sary committee, for all food
products used during the
featival to be kosher. Unfor-
tunately, it has come to our
attention that one of the pro-
ducts used was not
appropriate.
We apologiie for the in-
advertent mistake.

The Arabs'
Mind Set

During these past five
months there has been a
great deal of media reporting

and public reactions regar-
ding the situation in the ad-
ministered territories. The
fact that the media reports
are to a great degree "out of
context" can be very damag-
ing, in this case to Israel.

It is unfortunate, that the
general community does not
understand the situation for
whatever the reason, which
sometimes is blatant anti-
Semitism. The tragedy is the
misunderstanding of the
situation by individual Jews
which lead to damaging
statements from the Woody
Allan's and the Elie Weisel's

Western and Jewish ideals,
morality, way of life, values,
etc. cannot be imosed upon or
be expected from other
peoples. In the case of the
Middle East, we cannot ex-
pect the Arab people to adopt
these values, as they have
their own concepts of morali-
ty and way of life. Many
Arabs who have contact with
the West try to imitate
Western values and in many
cases mislead Westerners, but
when among their own peo-
ple, the naturally and
justifiably retain and behave
according to the values which
are part of their heritage and
upbringing .. .

The Arabs, including the
Palestinians, do not maintain
the tradition of negotiation.
lb compromise is to show
weakness. Even the peace
with Egypt was not developed
on negotiation or compromise
(at least territorial). For
Egypt to make peace with
Israel, all outward signs of
the Six-Day War had to be
eradicated — no territorial
compromise or territorial ex-
change. lb come to terms with
the Palestinians all signs of
Israel would have to be
eradicated. This is why peace
is so difficult .. .
