Hillel Team Wins
Israel Quiz Bowl
Thirteen Hebrew School
teams from Metropolitan
Detroit met at the Jewish
Community Center on Sun-
day to compete in the Israel
Knowledge Quiz Bowl, Yediat
Israel.
All the students partici-
pating in the event received a
certificate and an Israeli coin
set. Twelve Israeli bonds of
$250 each, donated by Paul
Borman and David Hermelin,
were awarded to the members
of the top four teams. The
first place team of Daniel
Alter, Erin Schwartz and
David Simmer was from
Hillel Day School. The Hillel
students also received the
book Pillar of Fire by Yigal
Lossin. Akiva Day School
placed second with students
Jonathan Kantor, Racheli
Perl and Rivky Schram.
Third place winners were
Rebecca Levenson, Karen
Oliver and Karen Stern from
Adat Shalom, United Hebrew
School. Temple Israel
students Marla Bean, Robert
Pilder and Ryan Tracht plac-
ed fourth.
The team effort was evident
in the written test, oral ques-
tions and slide identification
on Israel's history, geography
and government. Other par-
ticipating schools included
Jewish Parents Institute, Bir-
mingham Temple, Temple
Emanu-El, rIbmple Beth El,
Congregation Shaarey Zedek,
Beth Achim UHS, B'nai
Israel UHS, B'nai Moshe
UHS and Beth Shalom.
Members in the audience
also participated in an Israeli
Quiz identifying landmarks
and heroes. According to Yefet
Ozery, community shaliach,
130 people participated. Win-
ners and prizes will be
announced.
The Committee for Israel's
40th Anniversary sponsored
the event with Dr. Conrad
Giles and Jane Sherman as
moderators. Judges for the
event were Larry Jackier, Ir-
win Shaw and Donald Fox,
while the co-chairpersons of
the day were Fred Goldenberg
and Betsy Heuer.
Shira To Have
'Matzah Ball'
Shira BBG will hold its
third annual chapter dance,
The Shira Matzah Ball, on
Saturday at Adat Shalom
Synagogue at 9:30 p.m. The
Young Jam will provide
music.
During the dance Shira
BBG also will auction off
AZA members for dancing.
The proceeds from this will go
to the American Red Cross for
AIDS Awareness.
Tickets are available at the
door. The dance is open to all
Jewish youth of high school
age.
Rummage Sale
Seaholm High School's an-
nual "Trash and Treasures
Rummage Sale" will be held
Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to
1 15').m. in the commons room
at the Lincoln entrance of the
school, 2436 W. Lincoln Road,
Birmingham.
