Rally For Peace

New York (JTA) — Sup-
porters of Israel's left-wing
and moderate political move-
ments struggled to make
themselves heard over the
shouts of their right-wing
counterparts at a peace rally
Sunday.
They succeeded, for the
most part, because of an
unexpectedly large turnout
police estimated to total more
than 2,000. The demonstra-
tors packed a half block of
88th Street on the city's
politically liberal and heavi-
ly Jewish Upper West Side.
The "Rally for Peace" was
sponsored by a coalition of
more than 19 left-of-center
Jewish and pro-peace organi-
zations, including American
Friends of Peace Now,
Americans for Progressive
Israel, the Committee of Ar-
tists and Writers for Israeli-
Palestinian Peace and the In-
ternational Jewish Peace
Union.
According to a "call to ac-
tion" statement distributed to
reporters, the groups support
negotiations between Israel
and Palestinians "based on
the principles of mutual
recognition and self-
determination, for peace,
security and an end to oc-
cupation."

Five Die
In Terror Clash

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Two Israel
Defense Force soldiers were
killed and two were wounded
in a clash with terrorist in-
filtrators on the slopes of
Mount Hermon Tuesday.
Three terrorists were also
killed in the brief but fierce
gun fight on rugged terrain,
a military spokesman
reported.
The soldiers killed were
identified as the unit com-
mander, Lt. Col Shmuel Adiv,
of Kfar Saba, and a Bedouin
tracker whose name has not
yet been released.

Border Dispute
Goes To Jurists

Geneva (JTA) — An array of
boundary disputes between
Israel and Egypt was placed
in the hands of an interna-
tional arbitration panel
April 15.
The panel has 90 days to
prepare its report, but could
render a verdict sooner.
It will determine the owner-
ship of 14 localities along the
Israeli-Sinai border, the most
important of which is Taba, a
half-acre beach resort.
