Will Focus On Ethics

Ethics will be the focus of
three talks by guest scholar
Rabbi Mayer E. Rabinowitz at
Cong. Beth Shalom today and
Saturday.
At 8:15 p.m. today, he will
discuss "Interpersonal Ethics
Focusing on Parent-Child
Relationships!' His topic dur-
ing services tomorrow will be
"Business Ethics and Conser-
vative Halachah — Jewish
Law Responds to Wall Street
Scandals!"
A Shabbat family luncheon
will follow services with an
informal presentation on
"Jewish Law in the Intensive
Care Unit." Dr. Allen
Silbergleit will give a
response to Rabbi Rabin-
owitz's comments and Dr.
Sander Lipman and Rabbi
David Nelson will serve as
discussion moderators. The
event is open to the public.
Reservations are required,
and there is a charge for the
luncheon. For reservations,
call the synagogue office,

A member of the Commit-
tee on Jewish Law and Stan-
dards at the Rabbinical
Assembly, Rabbi Rabinowitz
also has served as secretary
and research consultant for
the committee. He is librarian
for the Jewish Theological
Seminary of America and
associate professor of Talmud.
Prior to becoming librarian,
Rabbi Rabinowitz was dean of
the graduate school for eight
years.

Dr. Miriam Shapiro

Dr. Miriam Shapiro, a noted
Jewish educator and biblical
interpreter, will be the
scholar-in-residence at Cong.
B'nai Moshe May 13-15. The
program is in honor of the
late Rabbi Moses Lehrman,
who served B'nai Moshe for
nearly 30 years.
The theme of the event will
be "On Fighting Loneliness
in the Modern World." The
weekend will begin with a
family shabbat dinner at 7
p.m. May 13, after which

Shapiro will discuss "How To
Avoid Loneliness in Marriage
and Beyond." Baby and child
care services will be provided.
There is a charge for dinner.
During May 14 services,
Shapiro will deliver the guest
sermon on "Communicating
with Children — Teaching
Real Jewish Values!' She will
lead an informal study ses-
sion on "The Song of Songs —
Can Sex Bring You Closer?"
at 10:30 a.m. May 15, follow-
ing a complimentary con-
tinental breakfast.
Shapiro holds a Ph.D. in
Hebrew Letters from the
Jewish Theological Seminary,
where she serves as professor
of Bible. She also has masters
degrees from Columbia and
JTS, and bachelors degrees
from Barnard College and the
Seminary. She serves as
education specialist for the
Westchester Board of Jewish
Education of New - York.
Among Shapiro's published
articles are "The Jewish
School Needs the Communi-
ty," "Elimination of Sexism in
Jewish Education," and
"Reflections on the Jewish
Theological Seminary at
100!"
