' children talk about their twins in their speeches at their celebrations. West Bloomfield's David O'Desky celebrated his .bar mitzvah in November. He shared it with Stanislav Gor- shunsky after writing to him for several months. Adat Shalom Synagogue helped the O'Desky family arrange the twinning. The week of the bar mitz- vah, when most households are frantic with last-minute details and minor disasters, David's family received an unexpected call from the synagogue. The Gorshunsky family had been granted per- mission to leave the Soviet Union. Gabriella Burman's twinn- ing in 1985 holds a special poignancy for her parents. They visited the Soviet Union and met the family of Anna Yoffe, Gabriella's twin. Alexander Yoffe, a brilliant mathematician, has been an active refusenik. Soviet authorities have harassed him since he applied to leave in 1972. In 1985, when the In- ternational Youth Conference took place in Moscow, Yoffe was ordered to leave the city. When he applied to emigrate, he lost his university teaching position. He now teaches elementary-age children, and tutors whenever he can. Anna's mother was a computer programmer and now teaches sewing. Recently Anna's brother, who is mar- ried, was allowed to emigrate with his wife and young baby. Estela Burman vividly remembers her family's preparation to visit the Soviet Union and the Yoffes. "Before we left we were thoroughly briefed by the Soviet Jewry Committee here. They have people who are excellent at this. We were told how you cannot take-lists of names and phone numbers with you, as it is not permit- ted. You have to be very creative in finding ways of coding such things so you can contact people there. They gave us maps of the subway stations and told us of everything we were to ex- pect." "When we arrived, we call- ed the Yoffes from the airport but Alexander wasn't home and the son answered. We ar- ranged to call back later that evening. My husband, Mat- thew, called at 10 p.m. 'from the lobby of the hotel as we weren't sure the telephone in the room wouldn't be monitored. We arranged to visit them the next evening. Alexander would wait for us at a certain subway station with a Time magazine in his hand. "Everything went off very well. We took a bus to his apartment and we had a wonderful visit. They are a lovely family. There were books all over the apartment, which was very small. "I was surprised how un- complicated it was to contact them. As far as we know we weren't followed, possibly because we were part of a large group — 37 people — and we had no problems even when we were on our own." "Alexander Yoffe is quite a remarkable man," she says. "He went on a hunger strike to get his son out. When we left he requested someone FOOTLOCKERS - TRUNKS CAMP BLANKETS HEAVY DUTY CONSTRUCTION AN ABSOLUTE CAMP NECESSITY 11x15x30 16x16x32 16x21x36 23x25x40 Four Sizes From $3198 -:t-i.-. 100% VIRGIN WOOL 60"x80" . - .
