Independence
Day Celebrated

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israelis
celebrated the 40th anniver-
sary of their country's in-
dependence with informal,
family picnics and formal
receptions given by officials.
Thousands turned out for the
traditional Independence Day
reception given last week by
Jerusalem Mayor Teddy Kol-
lek at the Citadel of David,
including- Christian leaders,
diplomatic representatives,
consuls general, Arab digni-
taries and tourists.
President Chaim Herzog
held a reception for veteran
commanders of Israel's 1948
War for Independence. It was
attended by senior officials of
the defense establishment
and current commanders of
the Israel Defense Force.
Awards for exemplary ser-
vices were presented to 120
soldiers.
The festive mood of In-
dependence Day was in sharp
contrast to Remembrance
Day, commemorated a day
previous, when Israelis
eulogized their war dead at
military cemeteries and na-
tional monuments.

'House Shortage
Hurts Ethiopians'

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Ethiopian immigrant com-
munity is becoming increas-
ingly bitter over the housing
shortage, a senior official of
the Jewish Agency for Israel
warned.
Uri Gordon, chairman of
the agency's immigration
department, said about 3,500
Ethiopians were still living in
transient accommodations
several years after their ar-
rival in the country. They are
confined to absorption centers
that are badly overcrowded,
he said.

Jewish Family Service joins with all Volunteer agencies
