bring him a Chanukah
menorah. Most of the
refusenik families ask for
things like those big tape
recorders, because they can
resell those and have enough
money to support themselves
for quite a while. But he
wanted the menorah."
Gabriella Burman started
writing to _ Anna about six
months before her bat mitz-
vah, but none of the letters
reached her twin. The Bur-
mans tried calling the family
in Moscow from Detroit a few
times but weren't successful.'
Like many others, Gabriella
did not maintain her letter-
writing efforts long after her
bat mitzvah, but often talks
about Anna, and still feels a
certain kinship with her.
In general, getting names of
refusenik families and poten-
tial twins is a difficult task.
Keeping the files up to date is
often a nightmare.
The sources of information
are many. Visitors to the
Soviet Union learn about new
refuseniks, and contact
Jewish agencies when they
return. Agencies in various
countries besides the United
States and Israel monitor the
comings and goings as best
they can.
But keeping completely up
to date involves bureaucratic
headaches for all the groups.
The National Conference on
Soviet Jewry serves as a na-
tional clearinghouse. But the
information is often weeks
even months, old. In earlier
years, most of the refuseniks
who left the Soviet Union
travelled to Vienna and on to
Israel. Keeping track was
fairly straightforward. Now,
the emigres head for many
different lands.
Occasionally a bureaucratic
foul-up occurs. One Detroit
mother complained to The
Jewish News her daughter
celebrated her bat mitzvah in
November, only to read a few
weeks later that the Soviet
youngster and her family had
been living in Southfield
since June.
This does not happen often,
says Bree. "I don't know
where the breakdown in that
case happened, and I am very
sorry that it did. Normally we
contact the Detroit families
when we hear their refusenik
family is being released. It
does happen that families do
get released before the
bar/bat mitzvah takes place,
and really that is what we are
working for — their release.
But sometimes you just can't
have control over things. It is
so hard for all the national
and international agencies to
get hold of all the information
immediately. We certainly do
the best that we can." CI

BY DR. STANLEY LEVINE, D.C.
Dr. of Chiropractic

"Your trouble is nerves, just nerves, that's
all," many have been told. But your nerves are
too important to your body to be dismissed so
easily.
Nerves are the electrical system of the
human body and the spinal col-
umn is the "switchboard" con-
trolling health.

In fact, every function taking
place in your body is under the
control of the nerve system, often
called "The Master . System of the
Human Body."
