hen Ann Arbor's
Jewish Community
Center moved, a lit-
tle more than a year ago, from
a rented building on Stadium
Boulevard, to its permanent
home on Birch Hollow Drive,
the four-year-old organization
had taken one giant step. And
recently, when the JCC hired
53-year-old Nancy Margolis
as executive director, it had
taken another.
"We were looking for some-
one with proven ad-
ministrative executive skills
and also someone with a vi-
sion, who could take a center
still in its early stages and ex-
cite people," explains Melvin
Muskovitz, JCC board
member.
"I see building programs
and building a sense of com-
munity as a challenge," says
Margolis. "It's the type of
work I like to do."
Margolis, who has an easy
style and relaxed manner is
no novice to the world of ser-
vice organizations. For the
past 12 years she was the
deputy director of the
Washtenaw County Com-
munity Agency, a $4 million
government department that
handled a variety of pro-
grams. She served two terms
as chairman of the Interfaith
Council of Congregations and
currently sits on several other
area boards.
Though Margolis has only
been on the job for several
weeks, she already works
13-hour days and she says
that her job will require her
to work "double full time."
Not that that bothers her
especially. "It's such fun. I'm
having a ball," she says.

Fun it may be, but Margolis

--rNtbAY:Ai5kIL 22,1988;

is hard-headed when it comes
to what needs to be done. "in
fact, running the center is a
business," she says seriously.
Knowing that like any busi-
ness, the JCC must be ac-
countable, she indicates that,
for the moment, the center is
going to have to operate with
its present, rather modest
budget of $180,000.
Margolis plans to look for
monies from sources like the
Council on Aging, the United
Way and the Michigan Coun-
cil on the Arts, but all that's
in the future. Even the
Jewish Community Associa-
tion - United Jewish Appeal,
which gave $14,500 to the
JCC in 1988, won't be tapped
for more right away. "We're
not going to ask for more
funding until we can show
that there are real needs,"
Margolis says.
Margolis is sprouting with
ideas, but probably the over-
riding theme to her vision for
the JCC is that it develop a
series of strong and con-
tinuous programs — begin-
ning with babies and ending
with the elderly — that com-
plement and supplement one
another.
She has some pet projects.
Margolis envisions programs
like weekend workshops for
the entire family, infant-dad
programs and full day pre-
school. She hopes that pro-
grams like those will lead,
naturally, to the JCC being
used by school-age children
and youth groups. "We have
to find out what they want to
do. We need to design pro-
grams to fit their needs."
With a beautiful, modern
physical plant — the 32,000
square foot building sits on
six acres of land and adjoins
a park — Margolis believes
that the center can be a real
source. "There are unlimited
