Microscopes
Without Lenses

Jerusalem — While the in-
vention of the lens madeit
possible for man to be able to
see farther into space and
deeper into the heart of both
living and inanimate matter
than ever before, a scientist at
the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem has developed a
method for probing even far-
ther into the microscopic
world without using any
lenses at all.
Aaron
Lewis
Prof.
discovered that light could be
passed through tiny holes
much smaller than its own
wavelength. This led him to
the idea of creating a
microscope without lenses
that would mimic and even
exceed the capabilities of even
the most advanced scanning
electron microscopes.

Israel, Colombia
Sign Trade Pact

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel will
exchange weapons for coal
under a four-year trade agree-
ment with Colombia, signed
in Bogota by the Israeli
minister of energy and in-
frastructure, Moshe Shahal.
Colombia will purchase
$250 million worth of
military equipment from
Israel, including the Kfir jet
fighter plane. Israel will pur-
chase 500,000 tons of coal
from Colombia over the four-
year period.

Greens Back
Art Exhibition

The opposition Green Party
is supporting a parliamen-
tary initiative to exhibit art
produced during the Nazi era
in West German museums.
But the party also insists on
both official recognition and
reparations for artists
declared "degenerate" by the
Nazis, who banned their
works from public display.

Jerusalem — By utilizing a
sophisticated method of ex-
tracting quantities of saliva
from leeches, Prof. Meir Rigbi
and his group in the depart-
ment of biological chemistry
at the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem have discovered a
wide range of new substances
in leech saliva, which inhibit
hemostasis, the stoppage of
blood flow. This has impor-
tant consequences in certain
types of surgery.
