Is Bombed

Rome (JTA) — Police
suspect pro-Palestinian, left-
wing extremists in the
firebombing that severely
damaged a Jewish-owned
bookstore in the northern in-
dustrial city of Turin. The ex-
tremists have been harassing
the Luxembourg Bookshop
and its owner, Angelo Pez-
zana, for the past month.
Last week's bomb, hurled
through the plate glass win-
dow, ignited a fire that
destroyed or damaged 1,000
books, bookshelves and part
of the interior structure of the
store.
Anti-Semitism has been on
the rise in major Italian cities
since the Palestinian uprising
began in the Israeli-admin-
istered territories four
months ago.

Dutch Cancel
Israeli Visit

Amsterdam (JTA) — Dutch
Premier Rudolf Lubbers and
Foreign Minister Hans van
den Broek last week post-
poned indefinitely their trip
to Israel, which had been
timed to coincide with Israel's
celebration of the 40th an-
niversary of its independence.
Lubbers had originally said
that Broek would accompany
him on the trip in order con-
vey to the Israeli government
Holland's objections to the
way it is handling the Palesti-
nian unrest in the West Bank
and Gaza Strip. Originally,
Lubbers planned to go alone,
returning a January 1986
visit to the Netherlands made
by Shimon Peres, who was
prime minister of Israel at the
time.

IDF Denies
Using Gas

Jerusalem (JTA) — A
charge that the Israel
Defense Forces has used
highly toxic gas to disperse
Palestinian demonstrators in
the administered territories
was denied by an IDF spokes-
man, who said the IDF uses
the same standard tear gas
that is used in riot control all
over the world.
The charge was made by a
doctor who is director of
health at the Vienna-based
United Nations Work and
Relief Agency for Palestinian
Refugees which operates
refugee camps in the ter-
ritories. He claimed that at
least two Palestinian youths
have died and 60 women had
miscarriages from inhaling
the gas.
