"I grew up in a family that has had a long history of community involvement, but my grandfather, Irwin Cohn, was the greatest influence in setting my goals. As a child I admired his work and decided that I wanted to also work toward community interrelations," says Liss. Liss recalls attending many events as a child where her grandfather was honored. She also spent many afternoons fishing with her grandfather on Pine Lake. "I knew he was very special, and I was lucky to be his grandchild. I saw my grandfather very involved in the Jewish community, but he also had time to work with the Urban league, the Round Table, the Capuchin fathers and the Seminary in Orchard Lake!' As a teenager, she was president of the Southeastern Michigan High School Red Cross. Lauren was graduated from Grosse Pointe University School. In that setting Lauren became. aware of being an outsider and her affirmation of Judaism became even stronger. At age 19, she worked on the Allied Jewish Campaign. She attended the University of Michigan and was graduated from Wayne State University with a teaching degree in 1972. Liss went into business with her mom for 11 years and owned the What's Cooking store in Applegate. In 1977 she married Robert Liss. She enjoys family vacations in Charlevoix and New Mexico. "I feel very fortunate that I have the time to be involved with such a diverse group of activities. I can't get bored because every day I'm involved with different people and different problems."
