day Sugar was fired, and the
debate lasted eight hours.
Sugar himself was not pre-
sent. Reuther set the tone:
"On the question of Maurice
Sugar, I frankly want to say
this for the record, that I
think Maurice Sugar is a
competent attorney, but I
don't think he is a brilliant
attorney. I think we can get
legal talent inAmerica that is
more competent than
Maurice Sugar. That is
number 1." Quite obviously,
that was not number 1, and
as the ensuing debate made
clear, Reuther's main objec-
tion was that Sugar "had
chosen sides within because
he has chosen sides without!'
Reuther then went off the
record to reveal a "secret"
meeting that Sugar had ar-
ranged with Weinstone and
B.K. Gebert, Communists. In
fact, it was the one that
Reuther and his brother had
requested Sugar to set up
after the state CIO conven-
tion in 1939!
Reuther went on to reveal
the mentality of the "new-
model" union. Whatever
Sugar's politics were, the
president claimed, he was too
involved in union affairs, too
much "a part of the labor
movement." After all, "When
you hire an attorney, you
don't hire him because he is
part of the labor movement.
That ought to be one of the
prime requisites, sure, but
you hire him to give you ex-
pert legal advice."
In a sense, only a few
episodes are provided here.
Yet they suggest a vaster
sphere in the life of a dynamic
personality. What has been
alluded to here suggests an
elaborated chapter in
Detroit's history. It is also an
inclusion of Detroit Jewish
experiences. They are an en-
couragement to become ac-
quainted with the character
of Maurice Sugar, with the
assistance of Prof. Johnson,
his biographer.

Pittsburgh — The Anti-

Appeals for the Third Circuit
prohibiting the display of
religious symbols in Pitts-
burgh's courthouse and in
front of the City-County
Building. ADL represented
Malik Tunador, a Turkish
Muslim, who was one of the
plaintiffs in the case.
