Killer To Work

On Kibbutz

Tel Aviv (JTA) — William
Shapia, 62, an American Jew
serving a 25-years-to-life
prison sentence for murder,
last week began a rehabilita-
tion program at a kibbutz.
Shapira was paroled by the
governor of Florida after
Herut Lapid, head of the kib-
butz movement's prisoner
rehabilitation program, in-
terceded on his behalf.
Under the agreement with
the Florida authorities, he
will be responsible for
Shapira for the 12 remaining
years of his sentence. Shapira
will reside at a kibbutz and
will share in the routine
duties expected of all
members.
Shapira, after serving with
the U.S. Marines in World
War II, fought in Israel's War
for Independence in 1948 and
was a member of the Israeli
border police for 15 years
before he returned to the
United States to take care of
his ailing sister.
In Florida, he opened a
store selling guns and am-
munition. His partner in that
business disappeared in 1973.
Two Mexicans were arrested
subsequently and charged
with the partner's murder.
They claimed they had been
hired by Shapira. Although
no body was ever found,
Shapira was convicted of the
alleged crime. Throughout his
13 years in prison he has
maintained his innocence.

Yad Vashem
Gets Photos

Jerusalem (JTA) — More
than 100 photographs taken
by Heinz Joest, a Wehrmacht
soldier who toured the War-
saw Ghetto in 1941, were
given to the Yad Vashem
Holocaust Center, which last
week opened an exhibition of
the photos.
The exhibition, titled "A
Day in the Warsaw Ghetto —
A Birthday Trip Into Hell"
was opened by Education
Minister Yitzhak Navon on
the occasion of the 45th an-
niversary of the Warsaw
Ghetto Uprising. Joest was a
hotelier and amateur
photographer who was sta-
tioned at a German army
camp near Warsaw.
The "birthday trip" referred
to in the title was Joest's bir-
thday in 1941 when, as he
told the West German
magazine Stern years later,
he first ventured inside the
ghetto to find out what was
going on behind its walls.
He recorded the sights in
