Realities of Life Are
Sometimes Rough

I've gotten used to my arthritis;
To my dentures, I've resigned,
I can manage my bifocals
But, 0 Lord, I miss my mind.
Just a line to say I'm living
And I'm not among the dead;
But I'm getting more forgetful
And I'm mixed up in my head.
For sometimes I -can't remember
When I stand at the foot of the stairs
If I'm going up for something, or
If I've just come down from there.
And before the frig' so often,
My poor mind fills with doubt;
Whether I've just put food away
Or just come to take some out!
So, if it's my turn to write or
call you,
Ther's no need in getting sore;
I may think I've already done so,
And don't want to be a bore.

Under the supervision of
the Zionist Council of
Detroit, the Jewish Com-
munity Council, the B'nai
B'rith Detroit Council and
more than 100 men's and
women's organizations,
Detroit JeWry will express
its solidarity with the
Palestine Yishuv by cele-
brating the emergence of
the Free Jewish State in
Judea — at 3:30 p.m. Sun-
day, May 16, on Central
High School Field, Lin-
wood and Burlingame.
Prominent speakers will
address this gathering
which will celebrate the
end of Jewish stateless-
ness, in spite of reported
attempts by the U.S. State
Department to scuttle
Judaea.
- AFL and CIO unions and
numerous non-Jewish
groups will join with the
Jewish community in
observing Jewish Libera-
tion Day.
All of our Jewish school

children will attend the
celebration as a mark of
unity with the youngsters
of Palestine who shared in
the fight for freedom.
It is imperative that

The following is the text
of the Declaration of In-
dependence adopted by the
General Council of the
World Zionist Organiza-
tion at a meeting in Tel
Aviv last month:
We have decided, relying
on the authority of the
Zionist movement and the
support of the entire
Jewish people, that upon
termination of the man-
datory regime there shall
be an end of foreign rule in
Palestine and that the
governing body of the
Jewish State shall come in-
to being.

And wish that you were here,

With my face so very red;
Instead of mailing you this letter,
I had opened it instead!

The state which the
Jewish people will set up
in its own country will
guarantee justice, freedom
and equality for all in-
habitants, regardless of
religion, race, sex or land
origin. It is our aim to
make it a state in which
the exiles of our people are
gathered together and in
which happiness and
knowledge shall prevail
and the vision of the pro-
phets of Israel shall il-
lumine our path.
At this hour when blood-
shed and strife have been
forced upon us we turn to
the Arabs in the Jewish
State and to our neighbors
in adjacent territory with
an appeal for brotherhood,
cooperation and peace. We
are a peaceful people, and
we are here to build in
peace. Let us then build
our state together as equal
citizens, with equal rights
and obligations, with
mutual trust and respect,
each with a true
understanding of the
other's needs.
Our laws are dedicated
to defending the liberty of
our people. If further trials
and battles are in store for
us, we shall defend with all
our might the achievement
upon which we place our
hope.
Right is on our side.
With us are the hopes of
the past generations of our
people. With us is the con-
science of the world. With
us are deposited the testa-
ment of the millions of our
martyred dead and the
resolute will to live of the
millions who have surviv-
ed. The sanctity of our
martyrs and heroes rests
upon us and the God of our
fathers will help us.
