Media Not Cause
Of Violence
Jerusalem — The com-
munications media can be a
catalyst for political violence,
but they are not the reason
for the violence itself, said Dr.
Gadi Wolfsfeld of the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem at a
conference sponsored by the
institute on "Communica-
tions and the Events in the
Territories."
Dr. Wolfsfeld, a lecturer in
both communications and
political science, said that
political demonstrations in-
vite coverage, and that
coverage in turn encourages
further demonstrations and
violence, and thus the situa-
tion often escalates.
On the other hand, he said,
media coverage can also serve
as a moderating influence —
when, for example, par-
ticipants in a violent
demonstration are aware that
TV footage could be used
against them in court. The
TV camera might also serve
to moderate the behavior of
security forces sent in to quell
disturbances, he said.

To The Right
Jerusalem (JTA) — The Na-
tional Religious Party, the
most moderate of Israel's
several Orthodox political fac-
tions, veered sharply to the
right Monday, when its
1,050-member central com-
mittee elected hard-line
Knesset member Avner
Shaki as its new leader.
Shaki edged out Religious
Affairs Minister Zevulun
Hammer for first place on the
NRP's Knesset election list.
The No. 3 spot went to Hanan
Porat, a Gush Ens nim mili-
tant who heads the NRP's
right-wing Matzad faction.
Meanwhile, Hammer and
his supporters began con-
sultations over possible seces-
