The next 40 years will, in all likelihood, see Israel at long last at peace with its neighbors, excelling in con- structive, peaceful pursuits instead of the martial arts; its relations with the United States and other freedom- loving countries growing in depth and scope; its know- how and expertise flowing in- to the less-developed coun- tries and evoking a reciprocal response in terms of friend- ship and understanding. More than likely, the Soviet flag will be fluttering from the Soviet Embassy in Jerusalem following the lif- ting of restrictions upon Jewish emigration. Hopefully, a new electoral system will be in place in Israel, eliminating the ex- tremist fringe parties presently playing havoc with its body politic. It is not inconceivable that the haredim will reach a modus vivendi with the "secularists," that Jews will be released from their captivi- ty in Ethiopia and Syria and that the trickle of aliyah from the West, especially the United States, will become, if not a mighty stream, at least a "respectable" tributary. The American Jewish diaspora will, of course, con- tinue to exist, sustained and enriched by an intimate, steadily growing interaction with Israel and mindful of its transcending obligations towards the third Jewish commonwealth. For regardless of its im- perfections, Israel is indispen- sable to our existence as Jews, to our survival as a people — one people — and to the fulfillment of our messianic vision. On a positive note, chasidic groups such as Gerer Chasidism have shown that Thrah scholarship go hand-in- hand with religious devotion. Emotionalism need not come at the expense of rationalism. Rabbi Zev Schostak Brooklyn, New York "A lot has been written about differences among the Orthodox. Many writers, felloW Jews, enjoy enlarging on these differences. In truth, however, we are only subtle shades of one ball of wax. I certainly recognize substan- tial divergence among our fellow Orthodox. Our outlooks, philosophy, attitude towards Israel are not belied. Yet, scratch a lbrah Jew — subcutaneously, so to speak — and we are quite the same. Under the skin, no Or- thodox would answer a phone on Shabbat, nor eat in a non- kosher restaurant, nor carry a tallit to shul on Shabbat (where there is no halachic enclosure). In an objective sense, this behavior can be termed "fanatic." Why do we act so? Simply, we believe that the Thrah was given to us by God. If so and with our general understan- ding of God as the omnipotent Creator, His laws must be obeyed, like it or not. All Or- thodox Jews believe in this simple but overwhelming credo.
