a highly advanced defense-
industry to qualify as the best
fighting force in the Middle
East. Israel's proven military
capabilities and potential
have been conducive to the
establishment of strong U.S.-
Israel relations, which, apart
from the spiritual affinities
binding the two countries,
have evolved into an expan-
ding and mutually rewarding
framework of military and
strategic collaboration. Ob-
viously, neither Theodor
Herzl nor Ahad Haam ever
anticipated that the Jewish
state would once be universal-
ly celebrated (or condemned)
for its military prowess,
although Max_ Nordau did
espouse a form of "muscular"
Judaism and Ze'ev Jabotin-
sky — upon a closer inspec-
tion of the "neighborhood" —
summoned Jewish youth to
seek proficiency in military
training.
On a spiritual/cultural
plane, Israel's achievements
have been no less impressive.
Whether in literature or
scientific research, Torah
study or strategic analyses,
the Israeli universities,
yeshivot and think-tanks
have produced a body of
literary and scholarly works
of great merit and distinction.
Under conditions of peace,
Israel's brain power has, in-
deed, the potential of becom-
ing a "light unto the nations."
The Zionist movement —
the only organized movement
in Jewry whose diagnosis of
the "Jewish problem" proved
to be the right one — refocus-
ed Jewish concerns on the
survival of the Jewish people
rather than the survival of
Judaism. "If a land is
destroyed," wrote Ahad
Haam, the founder of cultural
Zionism, "leaders_ like Ezra
and Nehemiah will arise to
rebuild it; but if a nation is
destroyed, whence will its
salvation come?"

The founding of the Hebrew
University in Jerusalem was
regarded as a forerunner of a
renascent Jewish culture. But
the main thrust of Zionism
was directed toward the
physical rescue and redemp-
tion of the Jewish people.
Once peace is attained and
Israel's physical security is
assured, there will no doubt
be a renewed burst of Jewish
creativity geared toward rein-
forcing and enhancing the
spiritual underpinnings of
the Jewish state.
This axiom still eludes the
breast-beating, left-leaning
"moralists" and apologists
who moan and squirm at the
sight of Israeli soldiers
"mistreating" violent Palesti-
nians bent on destabilizing
