Salinger iWins
Bat Mitzvah

Yardana Salinger will twin
the observance of her bat
mitzvah celebration with
Irina Shmerlina, daughter of
Moisey and Zhanna of Ukrai-
nian SSR, 9 a.m. Saturday at
Cong. Beth Shalom.
Irina will be 13 in 1988 but
it is forbidden by Soviet law
for anyone under 16 to take
part in a religious ceremony,
so she will be denied her right
to be a bat mitzvah. She will
be in need of proxy b'not
mitzvah.

Layne l'wins
Bar Mitzvah

Jonathon E. Layne, son of
Sanford and Jacqueline
Layne, will celebrate his bar
mitzvah with his twin in
absentia, Ilya Leites, at Shab-
bat services on Saturday at
Temple Israel.
Ilya is the son of Boris and
Inna Leites of Leningrad in
the Soviet Union. Leites is a
driver and his wife is a
teacher of physics and
mathematics. They have two
sons, Lev and Ilya.
The family first applied to
emigrate in 1979. The reason
for refusal is unknown.
Jonathon has written his
Soviet twin many letters, but
has received no response.

Hearshen
•'wins Rite

Rachel Hearshen, daughter
of Nancy and Joel Hearshen,
will twin her bat mitzvah
with Olga Sungorova of
Moscow, U.S.S.R. on Saturday.
The service will take place at
Temple Emanu-El in Oak
Park.
Rachel is an eighth grade
student at Norup Middle
School in Oak Park.
Olga is the daughter of Yuri
and Larisa Sungorov. They
first applied for exit visas in
1979 and were refused. Since
then, they have been refused
permission to emigrate on
eight separate occasions. The
Soviet government has not
given the family any reason
for its refusal.
Rachel has written to Olga
since last winter but has not
received an answer.
