sion of mah-jongg was, and re-
mains, a game used to raise
money for good causes. "A
large portion of the league's
fees are contributed to chari-
ty," explains Unger.
Though nobody can explain
exactly how mah-jongg
became transformed from an
old gambling game to a game
for very low stakes, it appears
that mah-jongg was intro-
duced, in much altered form,
into the clubs of Canton,
Shanghai and other foreign
settlements in China some-
time around the turn of the
century.

"Not long afterwards, it
spread to Europe and North
America. "It was all the rage
during the '20s," says Unger.
And interestingly, at that
time it was almost invariably
played by WASPs. When the
league was formed, strictly
for charitable purposes in
1937, most of its officers hap-
pened to be Jewish women.
Evidently that's how the
game became associated with
Jewish social life.
But even that is changing.
"We have members in every
corner of the world," says
Unger. "It's thriving." ❑
