SUNDAY BRUNCH

Beware when trading
refund forms by mail!

From time to time I receive inquiries from shoppers re-
questing information on how to trade refund forms through
the mail. There are many publications available that en-
courage this practice, and some shoppers are curious about
subscribing to these periodicals while others want to know
if trading by mail is really worthwhile. There are several
reasons why its not a good idea, and in the long run, there
is a good chance that your postage, qualifiers, and time
may be wasted.
Many manufacturers offer rebates in limited markets.
These forms are often coded and the clearing house can use
this code to reject responses that do not originate in the
selected market area.
Many products are available only in limite markets and
the forms you receive may require qualifiers d from products
not found in local stores.
Computers are being used more and more to track refunds
and this makes it easier for manufacturers to recognize of-
fers that were submitted from out of the area in which they
were issued.
Many offers start out in one area but are eventually
distributed across the country. If you try to cash in early by
trading and are rejected, the computers may spit out your
later response even though it is now legitimate.
By trading through the mail you stand the chance of not
receiving anything in return or getting back offers that have
already expired.
In addition, don't forget the costs involved. If you subscribe
to a newsletter listing trades be sure to include this cost plus
any ad you run, your postage, envelopes used, and time
you spend. You may be surprised at how little (if any) profit
you realize from this activity.
