Mrs. Israel Goldstein, then in the U.S. as a guest from Jerusalem with her husband, the world Keren Hayesod chairman, tugged at his jacket and said: "You'll sing `God Bless America!' He did. The guest speaker at that banquet was U.S. Senator Alvin Barkley who was soon to become vice president of the United States. He was half-an-hour late arriving from his Book Cadillac guest room. He explained that he had a temporary upset from the oysters he had eaten. In my introduction, I made note of the oysters, and said, "It would not happen to me!' What was not mentioned was the liquid that accompanied the oysters. There was charm and simplicity in Irving "Izzy" Berlin. His enrichment of musical history and the legacies he created for this land in which had more than nine decades of active roles will, fortunately, be honored and acclaimed anew with him present. at the anticipated great event May 11 in historic Carnegie Hall marking his 100th birthday. The newspaper, which quoted American sources in Saudi Arabia, said the CSS-2 missiles, which have a 2,000-mile range, will be deployed at two separate sites 60 and 375 miles south of Riyadh, the Saudi capital. The Saudi deputy defense minister, Prince Abed Al- Rahman al-Aziz, condemned Monday what he called Israeli "threats" to knock out the missiles. He warned such an act would be "blatant in- tervention in the internal af- fairs of the Saudi kingdom." U 0 U) • cr) v.) • • C.S. It makes a most in- teresting picture when Irv- ing Berlin and Jascha Heifetz sit together at the piano, and try to play a duet. Both these Russian Jews have made fame for themselves in the field of music, but along what dif- ferent lines! Perhaps of Berlin's early life had been the same as Jascha's, he too might have achieved a different distinction. It must be remembered that from the very cradle, Heifetz was regarded as a future virtuoso, and he was guarded and trained ac- cordingly. All that money and comfort and ease could accomplish were devoted to the musical education of Jascha Heifetz, while little Izzy Baline gained his meager training by going to the synagogue on the high Ho- ly Days and listening to the plaintive chanting of his father ... Izzy Berlin was 23 when he composed his first hit, "Alex- ander's Ragtime Band!' His soldier camps show song, "Oh, How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning," was another composition which kept corn- manding attention for a musi- cian who could not read music. Then came "A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody," among the many others. In World War II, he compos- ed "This Is the Army" and he personally appeared in it in New York and , on tour of many cities, including Detroit. are Unforgettable "Everybody's Doin' It" which dates back to 1911, and in their totality the popularity embraces the scores that are Berlin's. Berlin's marriage to Ellen Mackay, daughter of Clarance Mackay had a dominant role in Postal Iblegraph, for a time kept arousing interest in his sensational marriage to a Roman Catholic. His ballads remain to this day the chief interest in the man who con- tinues as a living legend on the eve of his 100th birthday. A reminiscence about Izzy Berlin not to be ignored. There was a national con- vention of the Jewish Na- tional Fund in Detroit in 1944. Berlin then was appear- ing with one of his shows at the Lafayette Theater and we invited him to be a guest and to participate in the banquet Bet. Slid. &' Evergreen 2 .
