pleted between 22 and 10 B.C.E., is a "21st century har- bor built years ago," the curators said. Man's mixed success in controlling the ocean environment can be seen throughout, starting with a crude stone anchor from the 13th century B.C.E. Each of the six historical sections — Helenistic, Hero- dian, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, and Crusader — is ac- companied by a wall-chart showing how deep below ground the finds were buried. The first sight in the ex- hibit is a classical statue of Tyche, the Greek goddess of fortune who symbolized Herod's city. Life-like with her right breast bared, the statue sums up the stark con- trast between Roman rituals and those of the native Jews. "Herod's Dream" also il- lustrates how one religion replaced the next down the centuries: Christians built a cathedral where the pagan temple once stood, and the Moslems in turn built their Great Mosque on the same temple platform. Caesarea's -Jewish com- munity is a permanent ele- ment in the city's history. Undecorated oil lamps testify to Jews' pious abstention from graven imagery, while a Jewish epitaph in Green from late antiquity implies assimilation. Hopes for the restoration of the Temple in Jerusalem are evoked by a Byzantine-era Hebrew in- scription listing priestly families and their native towns, arranged in order of service in the Temple. When the Arabs took the city after a fierce 7-year siege in 640 C.E., the East seemed to have triumphed over the West. But the city continued to produce fine, decorated ceramics. Some of these are on display. In this century, Kibbutz Sdot Yam settled the area around Caesarea for the first time since Herod's grand city was abandoned in 1291. `Herod's Dream" unveils a great deal about Herod, but it also presents a timely survey of the turbulence and con- tinuity of a major site in present-day Israel.
