at the time of his death.
Afflicted with polio as a
teen, doctors told Mr. Citrin
he would never walk. Yet he
defied the prognosis and
walked with a limp and the
aid of two crutches. Friends
and family say he overcame
the ailment. -
"He never complained
about his illness. He had a
fine disposition," says long-
time family friend Leonard
Simons. "I never saw him
scream or yell or lose his
temper. He would do any-
thing he could to help."
Equally important, friends
say, Mr. Citrin never stopped
working — whether for profit,
for a Jewish agency or for
his family. Mr. Citrin even
founded a large health care
products company that sup-
plies products for handicap-
ped people to dealers through-
. out the country.
"Marty was a healer and a
mediator," Honigman says.
"He cared. He was driven. He
was so far above the norm."
Jacob Citrin, an immigrant,
also was a prominent com-
munity leader and worked
podigiously for the better-
ment of Jews. Mr. Citrin
followed his father's dreams,
serving on several boards of
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion of Detroit before he was
elected Federation president
in 1975. He won the distin-
guished Butzel Award for
communal service, named for
Detroit's Federation founder
Fred Butzel.
He rose quickly to national
prominence, serving on the
boards of directors of the
United Israel Appeal and the
Jewish Agency for Israel. He
also was a member of the
board of trustees of the
United Jewish Appeal.
"He was supportive of those
with whom he worked," says
Mike Zeltzer, who succeeded
Mr. Citrin as Detroit Federa-
tion president. "He gave of
himself as much as he could."
Mr. Citrin's communal ca-
reer reached its height when
he was elected president of
the Council of Jewish Federa-
tions in 1981, the umbrella
organization of the 210
Jewish federations through-
out the United States and
Canada. Mr. Citrin was the
second Detroiter to be elected
to this highest of communal
positions.
Max Fisher, who flew into
the city this week from a
meeting in Washington to
mourn his friend, was the
first CJF president from
Detroit. Mandell Berman,
current national CJF presi-
dent, is the third Detroit
leader to take the post.
"He was a world-class

Jewish leader," says Carmi
Schwartz of New York, CJF
executive vice president. "He
had such a clear and critical
understanding of the relation-
ship of the North American
Jewish community with other
Jewish communities."
During Mr. Citrin's ad-
ministration, the CJF profes-
sional leadership was review-
ed and reorganized.
"He was a broad-gauged
guy," Berman says. "He
understood the issues better
than most anybody I've ever
met. He had a brilliant
organizational mind."
People who worked with Mr.
Citrin agree that he had a
tremendous ability to analyze
situations and design solu-
tions. They remember him as
well as a story teller, who
shared vignettes of life. He
was a private man whose
single most important in-
terest was family. He enjoyed
being part of a close-knit
family with intimate friends.
"He was humorous and a
great host," says friend Mort
Lieberman. "Among his close
friends, his nickname was
`Don Martine? It was a sign of
affection.
"We looked upon him as a
sage. He had tremendous
wisdom," Lieberman says.
Jewish education was im-
portant to Mr. Citrin, who
helped' finance the Jewish
post-graduate cultural pro-
gram at Harvard University.
He also was an active mem-
ber of Temple Israel and Tem-
ple Beth El. Jacob Citrin was
a founding member of Thmple
Israel. Martin Citrin was a
member of the board of trus-
tees for Sinai Hospital.
About 700 people — in-
cluding local and national
leaders and members of the
social elite — filled Ira Kauf-
man Chapel in Southfield on
Monday to mourn the loss of
Mr. Citrin.
