Deutch. In addition, the
younger Mr. Deutch was he
co-owner of radio station
WDTX-FM. He also owned
two radio stations in
Cleveland.
In his spare time, Mr.
Deutch was an avid out-
doorsman. He was a member
of Cong. Shaarey Zedek and
especially devoted himself to
the Hebrew Free Loan
Association. He encouraged
the less affluent in
establishing themselves in
business ventures and
assisted them in getting
HFLA aid. He also had a deep
interest in yeshivot here and
in Israel.
Mr. Deutch leaves his wife,
Lenore; a son, Bradley; a
daughter, Stephanie; his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
(Elsie) Deutch; and two
brothers, Irwin of Beverly
Hills, Calif., and Marty.
Peter Altman
Peter Altman, former vice
president and treasurer of the
Aircraft Division of Continen-
tal Motors, died April 8 at age
86.
Born in Montreal, Que., Mr.
Altman lived more than 60
years in Detroit. He was an
aeronautical engineer. He
was a member of the Society
of Automotive Engineers for
more than 50 years and a past
chairman of its Michigan
Branch. He was a member of
the first graduating class of
the University of Detroit
School of Aeronautical
Engineering. Mr. Altman
taught for many years at the
school.
He leaves his wife, Jessie;
two sons, William of San An-
tonio, Tex., and Jerome H. of
New York; two daughters,
Susanne Zimmerman of San-
ta Barbara, Calif. and N. A.
Daniels of Elmwood, Tenn.; a
brother, Hyman of Montreal;
two sisters, Mrs. Bertha
Weinstein and Mrs. Anna
Cohen, both of Montreal; 15
grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
Sylvia Parzen
Sylvia Goldsmith Parzen,
who had an early record in
educational and social ser-
vices in her native Detroit,
died Apri 10 at age 86.
Mrs. Parzen was a social
worker for the city of Detroit
and the Jewish Family Ser-
vice in the early 1920s. In her
lifelong volunteering
capacities she taught Sunday
school at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek that was then on Willis
and Brush in which her fami-
ly had an actively par-
ticipating role. She was under
the tutelage of Rabbi A.M.
Hershman.
She also could be considered
an organizer of Young Judaea
in Detroit, having been
among the leaders of the first
Zionist youth groups formed
here.
While her husband,
Herbert Parzen, was studying
for the rabbinate in New
York, Mrs. Parzen was a social
worker and later was a par-
ticipant in activities that in-
volved rabbis's wives on a
community and social basis.
A Parzen forest established
through the Jewish National
Fund is named in honor of
Mrs. Parzen and her husband.
Mrs. Parzen was active in
Cong. Shaarey Zedek and
Hadassah and was involved
in activities on behalf of the
Jewish Theological Seminary
and Shaare Zedek Hospital in
Jerusalem.
She leaves a sister, Ro-
mayne Goldsmith of Beverly
Hills, Calif.; brothers-in-law,
sisters-in-law, nieces and
nephews.
Lee Brody
Lee B. Brody, an attorney
and senior partner in the firm
of Smith, Hirsch and Brody,
died April 7 at age 68.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio,
Mr. Brody was graduated
from Yale University with
honors and the University of
Michigan Law School. He
received the Order of the Coif
in 1945. He was a member of
the Law Review at the
University of Michigan.
In his spare time, he hiked,
sailed and skied. He was one
of the oldest persons to have
participated in the Outward
Bound program. He was a
member of Cong. Shaarey
Zedek.
He leaves his wife,
Theodosia; a daughter, Mrs.
Kenneth (Betsy) Gold; and
three grandchildren.
Philip Smullin
Philip Mayer Smullin, a
Toledo attorney, died March
17 at age 61.
A native Detroiter, Mr.
Smullin lived in Toledo most
of his life. He received his law
degree from the University of
Michigan in 1951. He was a
member of the Toledo, Lucas
County and Ohio bar associa-
tions and was admitted to
practice before the Ohio
Supreme Court.
He was a member of the
Tarbuth Association and
Temple B'nai Israel in Toledo.
He is survived by a cousin
in Boston. Interment Toledo.
